Well, for best and reference getting-type, play them as they came. You don't necessary need to play the original 2 2D ones andPortable Ops and Rising ain't too important, because they are considered semi-canon(You can play them tough)

Order then(With mentioned above) would be

Metal Gear(Originally 1989 for MSX2, nowadays you can get it by getting MGS3 Subsistence(PS2) or the MGS HD Collection(Old console generation(PS3, XBox 360...))

Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake(Originally 1990 for MSX2, nowadays you can get it by getting MGS3 Subsistence(PS2) or the MGS HD Collection(Old console generation(PS3, XBox 360...))

Metal Gear Solid(Originally 1998 for PS1, nowadays you can download it per Store on PS3 or PS Vita(Or if you have a ps1-3, you can also buy the original ps1 game)

Metal Gear Solid 2 Sons of Liberty(Originally 2001 for PS2, nowadays you can get it in the HD Collection)

Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater(Originally 2004 for PS2, nowadays you can get it in the HD Collection)

Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops(Originally 2006 for PSP, nowadays you can download it in Store on PS Vita)

Metal Gear Solid 4 Guns of the Patriots(Originally 2008 for PS3, PS3 is your only option for this game, no alternatives)

Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker(Originally 2010 for PSP, nowadays you can get it in the HD Collection)

Metal Gear Rising Revengeance(Originally 2013 for PS3/XBox360, get one of these if ya want to play it)

Metal Gear Solid V Ground Zeroes(Originally 2014 for old and new console generation and PC, get one of these)

Your best bet is to get a PS3(If you don't have), then only Portable Ops is the only game you cant play on it, for both V games tough new generation consoles or PC might be prefereed
