  1. I'm about to create a fursona for a new identity. I've worked out parts of his personality and design (though I haven't drawn him yet), however, I've hit one snag - the name. My character is an active, social, and sporty young deer. I've settled on the first name John, referencing "John Doe" and "John Deere", however I'm looking for a more fitting last name for the character. I'm aiming for something meaningful, symbolic, or representative of his species identity.
  2. To this question, I'd have to say to pick and choose whichever parts of the episode sound good as headcanon. We won't know for sure what is or isn't until future episodes either confirm or deny it. This episode showed a lot of wacky, irreverent humor that surrealistically breaks the established rules of the show's world the same way many Discord or Pinkie Pie gags do. Filling an entire episode with that sort of humor makes it harder to pin down what's to be accepted as canon and what isn't. For example, Gummy's monologue can be seen as either a joke or a legitimate character trait of his, or Bon Bon being a spy. We don't really know if it's legit or if she made the whole thing up and the episode took it seriously for the lulz. For now, I'd treat the episode as if it were written by Pinkie Pie or Discord; as in being factually hard to distinguish what's reality and imaginative exaggeration in the MLP universe. In short, it's just a lot of fun and I wouldn't try to think as hard about that aspect of this episode as I would with any other.
  3. The credits and most likely the script specify that those really were Gummy's thoughts. IMO the best use of Lee Tockar's voice talents on this show to date. I really thought the question here would be if how Gummy was seen in this episode should be taken as how we see Gummy in the rest of the episodes. It was fun wondering what it was like from his perspective in every one of his appearances, where he seemed not to give a damn about anything.
  4. Pinkie Die Apple Doom Bomb Bomb ...and that's all I've got.
  5. Still trying to wrap my head around this: Doctor Who met The Big Lebowski. And they were all ponies.

  6. I'm surprised you haven't put any status up about the new episode.

I'm putting it off till later this week as I have other things to do at the moment.

  7. I'd have to say yes, but it was the combination of both the show and the fandom that did it for me. I have never seen such a diverse and welcoming community in my life, and as a cartoon enthusiast, I had no idea that a seemingly normal kids' cartoon could actually bring so many people together, even people who don't normally watch cartoons. I've had the confidence to start putting up my own work, I learned a lot of social skills, and I became much more sociable as a person through the friends I've made here and on DeviantArt. So, by consequence, this show actually did do it for me. Even after years of professional help, I don't think I've ever made as much progress in my social life at such a rate as one year of participating in the brony fandom. I still need help to get friendships going, but it's a lot easier for me now.
  8. I'll admit I was not a fan of the idea of a fanservice episode throwing jokes over the heads of some members of the audience, directly at the bronies. That's what fan animations are for, and at points in the episode I was convinced I was watching a fan animation with a budget. However, the absolute self-awareness this script shows in its brand of humor in between all the pandering is really what made it work. Only a successful show like MLP could have possibly pulled something like this off. Gummy's internal monologue, the "spy" angle being used to justify Bon Bon's name change, and actually using Steven Magnet's name (a name which came from a bad YouTube caption) came as the biggest surprises to me. The best way a comedy can work is through the element of surprise, which is why those elements really appealed to me more than Bon Bon and Lyra, Doctor and Derpy, Vinyl and Octavia, etc. I very much agree with the moral being a highlight of the episode. It's often overlooked that this episode actually had a plot under all that fanservice and comedy, and this particular moral is really something the show had actually failed at delivering on past occasions ("Twilight's Kingdom" and "Bloom and Gloom"). I like your take on it being a message for the fanbase. Overall, I'm not into fan pandering, but the meta humor was enough to make the episode very much bearable. The show was basically making a parody of itself, and it really should be encouraged for the show to keep trying new things no matter how radical the ideas may be, if they work just as well in the context of the show.
  9. I hate Friendship is Witchcraft for its overt cynicism, deadpan, poor timing, shock humor, and disregard for comedic structure. I liken it to Family Guy in style, structure, and fan reaction (either you love it or you hate it). Sweetie Bot, I must admit, is a good idea, but is absolutely wasted on this show. I'm as much a fan of mixing ponies with robots as the next guy, but I won't do Sweetie Bot because I hate that show. However, the fandom has run with it, because like I said, it's actually not a bad idea. There are plenty of Sweetie Bot redesigns and reanimations on YouTube, Derpibooru, and DeviantArt easily reachable within a single search.
  10. They're calling that gray Pegasus mare "Muffins" now, I could swear she used to have a different name. I think she's a spy.

At least she wasn't referred to as such in the episode directly. Seeing that in the end credits was annoying for me to see.

She looks awfully familiar to another pony I know named Ditzy. Now that I think about it, Derpy looks pretty similar too. Are they related somehow? Regardless, I need to watch the new episode.

  11. I went in kinda lukewarm on the idea that background and secondary characters can carry an episode without it devolving into a stream of memes and in-jokes. I had thought the rule of the day would have been fanservice that few others not fully immersed in the fanbase would have been able to relate to. I must say, I went in expecting not to fully care about it, and much to my surprise, I was impressed with the way the whole episode went off. Aside from the moments of straight-up fanservice, most of which had already been spoiled, there were plenty of surprises I could not have reasonably expected, like canonizing Steven Magnet's name, actually going with the "spy" angle to satirize the common fandom joke surrounding name changes in Bon Bon's case, and Gummy's philosophical internal monologue, one of the real highlights of the episode for me purely because of how unexpected it was. In the end, the message that tied it all together was very strong and fitting, affirming the importance of everypony and the beauty of life in Ponyville even away from the show's focus. I think it's a fine moral that they have missed multiple opportunities to tell in the past. There's nothing really deep about it, it's just a very fine and thoroughly entertaining diversion of the norm from the show with an amazing message, and I'm fine with that.
  12. Us NASCAR fans get a background pony episode every year. It's called the Sprint Showdown.

  13. Still trying to find the door behind all these ponies at the wedding. Makes me wonder; who let the darn changeling in here?

  14. Another great post. I had no idea the circus train was that long, or that they ever used Amtrak electric power to pull it.
  15. I really feel that number scores, although an easy way to remember a review, are an oversimplification of the content of the review and its subject. Among fandom reviewers, I more favor Strebiskunk's style of summing up all of the positives and the negatives at the end.
  16. I might be able to watch the new episode today! Have a lesser-known background pony!

  17. Great post. I vacation in Orlando a lot, so I'm used to seeing these things.
  18. Very true. The top thing was the glaring lack of focus CL had on the story side. ZT looks to be much more creative once you take a look at the synopsis, and inspired when really considering how different in style the trailer makes this film out to be. I think it's probably the first anthro film to actually use the word "anthropomorphic", showing it may have a certain sharpness and genre savvy CL sorely lacked. As for the representation issue, mammals are just easier to draw. Though it won't be long until we hear outcry for reptile, amphibian, and avian representation in movies.
  19. Please, nothing about the new episode until at least Sunday morning. I won't be able to see it until then.

  20. I don't know what to say about this. The writing and style of the trailer looks pretty snappy and so does the art style (to an extent), but I'm getting a serious Chicken Little vibe from this. One of the problems I had with that movie were the incessant, age-old animal-related visual gags that the average grandma could easily have written. Disney's been making a move towards more genre-savvy, personal projects as of late, so I'm actually kinda looking forward to this.

  24. I really like your use of language. This backstory does feel as if it is filling in the giant question mark on Starlight Glimmer's backstory through vividly-recounted experiences. The realism of it as a political piece is very striking, and it is only appropriate you used Common Sense as an inspiration considering all the scholarly influences the episode itself actually had. It's also a nice dose of irony that one of the most influential documents in the founding of America could serve as the inspiration for something that represents the opposite of many American values, and the citation of Jean-Paul Sartre (the pun in the name is fitting) really shows how inspired this piece is. I like the capitalization on words that refer to the ponies themselves. This really is something that catches Starlight Glimmer's possible state of mind before "The Cutie Map", especially with intricate details and political realism such as characterizing the Mage Meadowbrook as a figure of her ideology. The surprisingly deep political and social commentary undertones are why the episode itself is so well-regarded, and I like how you brought that front and center to prove just how much a pony show can be surprisingly intellectual. It's one of the reasons why I enjoy the episode so much, and this work shows that you do as well. So, yeah, I liked it. I liked it a lot.
  25. IQ is only useful in the field of mental health, for whatever reasons reasons they use it. I know very little, if anything, of mental health so I won't try to find it out. Having an above-average IQ has no bearing on your job prospects, and of course, none on your education (though whether it should is up for debate). The more important things are whether you apply it, which depends on one factor outside of your control (if you ever get a chance to apply your potential) and from that, one factor in your control (if you choose to when presented with the opportunity).
