  1. To the 3 or so of you who were expecting me to do a review on "Bloom and Gloom", I'm sorry but it's going to be late. I'm trying a few new things at the moment. In the meantime, this post I made sums up what I thought of it so far: http://mlpforums.com/topic/126183-s05e04-bloom-and-gloom/?p=3682093

It's just a couple of pieces for DeviantArt in order to try new styles and build up my non-pony gallery. I have an outline on it already and I'll try to fit it into the time I have left over. No worries.

  3. The Rangers strategy seemed to be just hoping for power plays, seeing how they couldn't capitalize when the game's momentum was swinging back and forth. He who stays out of the bawx the longest wins.
  4. Who else absolutely hates to speak using cliches? They do say variety is the spice of life, after all.

It's one of my weaknesses I believe I have. I wish to rid myself of it as I feel my dialogue is often repetitive.

I dunno...cliches give the mind something to latch onto to help convey meaning. I guess they have positive and negative aspects.

  5. I have to say, your blog on today's episode was very touching and informative. I related to the episode very much as well,

  6. Say what you want about 90% of the episode being a dream sequence. As someone who continues, day after day, to struggle with what Apple Bloom struggles with, every bit of how that dream portrayed her, the world around her, and other characters, felt very natural and fitting for the emotional state Apple Bloom was in. When looking at every scene throughout the middle of this episode, you shouldn't look at it without considering it in the context of how Apple Bloom sees the world, not as it actually is. DT and Silver Spoon are up to their old tricks because that's all she knows of DT and Silver Spoon. You can't expect any character development on their part, because technically they weren't actually in the episode, that was all in Apple Bloom's head. The same can be said for those scenes of the other two Crusaders telling her off. That's all her expectation, not to be measured against reality. Apple Bloom's always been impatient about getting a cutie mark, but this episode dealt with a different manifestation of that. It dealt with her fearing the unknown, and that's very believable for someone in that situation, especially of her age. The kinds of questions she brought up are actually quite familiar to pretty much every Crusaders thread in Show Discussion since the previous season ended, and ones I've been waiting for this show to take on. With this undying devotion to self-image MLP's world has, it never really addresses the concern of a negative self-image too often. This episode finally acknowledges the presence of such a possibility, to spend every hour of your short life working for something that didn't benefit you. Been there. Done that. Smoked it. Called it an Uber. (Google that reference if you don't get it.) This episode very accurately and fittingly reflects the emotional state of someone who deals with the quest for self-image under heavy and conflicting external pressures. It's something that damns you if you do and damns you if you don't. This is one episode where you really have to look at the big picture. As a dream sequence, it really works. It captures all the feelings of a dream: the familiarity and the realism combined with the surreal and psychological aspects of it. That really helps in delivering its message, not to worry yourself too much over things that are realistically outside of your control. Something I myself, for one, can very much relate to.
  7. Apple Bloom in "Bloom and Gloom" = every Show Discussion thread about the Crusaders in the past 11 months.

You don't suppose the writers actually look at this site's forums for ideas, do you? ...Nah.

  8. I'm sorry to hear about what happened. I hope you can stick around the forums for a while. Many of us are still around and there are plenty of other places you can post to keep in touch with us.

  9. If they wouldn't use one method to catch all criminals, why would they use one method to shape many diverse talents and personalities into one academic and talent idealism?

  10. The pilot episode of FOX's short-lived Allen Gregory adult cartoon was so disturbing that it had me reaching for the power button 15 minutes into its original airing back in 2011, right after an extremely disgusting scene that I wouldn't dare repeat here (Mr Enter reviewed it if you're interested). The show was nothing but shock humor and piles upon piles of jokes coming from the main character being a condescending douchebag to everyone else around him, who all seem to be devoid of personality as well. The show was canned after seven episodes, but my real question is why was it even ordered in the first place? I guess it was because Jonah Hill's name was attached to it and because it was creepy and offensive, and you know how FOX cartoons love being creepy and offensive for the sake of being creepy and offensive while disregarding the point of satire and social commentary.
  11. An interesting question was raised today: is competition healthy or destructive for creativity? Here's my comment on a DeviantArt feature (link to the feature is the title): http://comments.deviantart.com/1/525479618/3806966891/3997854

If you can balance the need to be competitive to keep your spirit and skill sharp while at the same time insulating your idea and genius so that it will be sheltered enough for you to find and sharpen it better, then I believe you will achieve the best result as you're right, competition can be a two way street.

    Living Life

If your life is in need of improvement, you can't necessarily blame the Internet for it. There are many factors, both internal and external, that bring forth urgency in the need to improve one's life. The struggle to improve is what I believe to be the sole purpose in our time in this universe and the Internet may be one of the biggest strides we've ever made in pursuit of it. In fact, the Internet is capable for a lot of good. What the individual has to control in order to keep it from going bad is impulsiveness, overstimulation, and the need for competition. It was a combination of those three things that landed me in trouble with the moderators a while back, and while they've recently admitted that their actions were too hasty and overbearing, I can't deny the effects of these drivers on my actions and what I could do to change them. The Internet is not worth quitting cold turkey, except in the most dire of cases, because it wipes out all possibility that it can do any good. Thanks to the Internet and the Brony community specifically, I've built up a decent amount of confidence and understanding of the world. However, like I said, I know the negative side all too well. It causes a lot of emotional pain when my impulses and competitive nature (which has rarely ever been given another outlet) take over my Internet use. For a time, it was ruining my life, my grades went down, and I lost contact with all of my real life friends. I know from experience that simply telling people to "put the phone/computer down and get outside" does not work. Something needs to force their hand in order to get these things done. I had my close call and it enabled me to slow down and reevaluate what was happening in my life. I'm not advocating for everyone to do something stupid in order to draw moderator attention or to ban anyone who shows signs of addiction from their favorite sites. I'm just saying that everyone who may be under such influence may need some kind of wake-up call on a personal level in order to realize what's happening in their lives.
  13. I like your review style. It's very structured and makes all the points stick, and never seems like it's rambling. With that said, I think that mattress clerk's smile was a coincidence. It's not like they haven't used such a smile in the show before Season 5, and also it was most likely the same "Quills and Sofas" salespony from Season 1.
  14. She's basically asking everything the fandom is:

  15. MLP tends to like using the "X is my middle name" cliche a lot. Two fanon middle names originating in fan works were "Jennifer" and "Miriam", but this is merely a curiosity. It's not like knowing Dash's middle name is consequential to the plot anyway.
  16. I swear she sounded just like Fluttershy, but it was Tabitha St Germain (Rarity) that was credited for her voice (as "Spa Pony"). I guess we've got a sure stand-in for the next time Andrea Libman has to call in sick.
  17. To be honest, I had heard "Castle Sweet Castle" compared to "Suited for Success" but not to "Testing, Testing, 123" until Dr Wolf brought up rehashing that episode as a possible direction the episode could have taken. Now, the similarities seem more obvious.

    1. Nuke87654

      Nuke87654

In truth, it is more similar to Testing then Suited as Suited required the remaining five to screw up with Rarity's chances to pull a hail mary move to save her. Testing made the remaining five helping out a friend as the primary focus of the episode instead. I'm sure there are other similarities I'm missing as well.

  18. I hate it when I'm tired, lazy, feel hopeless over things that I should have under control, and get jealous over things that should not be considered competitive (I guess that's my nature). Why did I know this guy was going to come here and say this? :comeatus: :comeatus: :comeatus:

  20. No one knows for sure what Hasbro's long-term plan is, and they're definitely in a spot here. Likewise, the writers can't plan for anything since there is a distance between them and the corporate parents that bankroll the franchise. The only thing resembling a long-term plan was when Hasbro declared to investors a year or two ago that they wanted to go for 5 more years, which would take G4 to the end of the decade consistent with Hasbro's strategy of rebooting the franchise every decade. However, that was before certain variables, namely Hasbro giving up on the Hub and turning over promotional duties to Discovery, came into the equation. I think the writers may have written "Magical Mystery Cure" with the possibility of being a series finale in mind, given that Season 4 was not confirmed when production launched a year prior to the episode's airing. This shows how much of the show's fate depends on last-minute decisions. All there is now is rumors. Possibly the movie could be the end of it, maybe it'll end at 6 or 7 seasons, or it could go on even longer than that. On the possibility of the show ending on top of its game, while that could go either way critically, commercially that would be definite suicide with a winning formula like MLP. With the show running the way it is right now, I'd say it could run a season or two more before we can definitely start talking about it ending in the near future. For MLP running long, one thing for sure, do not compare it to a show like The Simpsons or SpongeBob. Both shows are straight-up comedies which stagnated due to the combination of staff changes and reliance on the status quo. MLP has always been more about the substance and has ways of changing things up when the time arises, so rest assured there will always be something attempting to keep MLP fresh and have faith in the writers to keep the show good. Right now, it's still too early to tell because of the last-minute, short-term nature of these decisions and the fact that Season 6 has already been ordered. It doesn't hurt to wonder where this show will go next, but it's best to take these things as they come.
  21. I had heard about these, I think the one for NYC is at Floyd Bennett Field and is a pretty popular destination for bus fans. I remember there being a truck roadeo in Smokey and the Bandit. Also, Denny Hamlin's car in the truck roadeo video!
  22. I have it in Google Chrome and I only use it when I'm on a site that I definitely know is running ads with hijackers or that are otherwise infected. It works fine for me when I need it.
