  1. Interesting possible headcanon: What if Starlight Glimmer actually knew who Twilight Sparkle was beforehand and founded the village as a response to her ascension, out of jealousy of their similar talents but different fates?

  2. I've always found Gottlieb Daimler's mantra "Das Beste oder nichts" ("The best or nothing") both inspiring and potentially destructive. What is it to you?

What I've found "destructive" about it is that it may encourage people in a creative or otherwise less competitively-focused field, where winners and losers are less clearly defined, to force themselves to measure up to someone else's standards. Inspiring that it gets them to try their best, but destructive in suggesting that it's compulsory to *be* the best. In short, struggling to accept that there's "always someone better".

That's an interesting way of looking at it. I just interpret it individualistically; "best" is a word that is objectively defined to each person's ability to do what they can do until they reach their own limits. I believe there is a difference between "best" and "perfect." The latter is an ideal that is humanly impossible to achieve while the former is our personal estimate of how close to perfect we can become.

I also put it in a context of competition, where the "best" is not unattainable, but can only be one of many possible contenders, and turning things that aren't or shouldn't be competitions, like tests of writing skill, for example, into comparative tests that make clear winners and losers.

  3. I was convinced that Sugar Belle's adorable voice had to be the first incidental voice provided by the geographically-challenged Tara Strong, but it turns out she was actually voiced by Almost Tara Strong (Rebecca Shoichet). Just goes to show how talented these Vancouver VAs are, that they can really convince you that they're someone else. Sam Vincent also had me convinced he was either Brad Swaile, Kirby Morrow, or Brian Drummond.

  4. The only thing you've outright done wrong here is describe this essay as "horrible". When I see this essay, I see a lot of my own writing style in it. Your structure is very sound. The ideas flow naturally, your explanation of the themes here works very well, and you use a lot of language that is high-level, even for me. The only thing I would think of changing is making the real-life examples a bit less specific, but that's just me. You're the one who took the AP class. (I never did because I was afraid of the extra workload and I did not see how I this would benefit my diploma and/or future chances of finding work. It looks good for college but then again I was never very passionate about college.)
  5. Starlight Glimmer's next episode should focus on the Mane 6 or somepony trying to track her down while learning about her past and retracing her steps, possibly incorporating themes of detective fiction to build upon the dystopian theme of "The Cutie Map". Even though it's nice to have a little mystery, it would be even more interesting to find out where she went wrong and why she did what she did in order to bring closure to this arc.

  9. Of the virtually unlimited number of regimes Starlight's can be compared to, school systems are one, and especially one to which I've given very much thought. I had a lot of trouble in school, and though the amount of individuality and free reign they may give you varies depending on the exact school you're talking about, they all generally follow the same destructive pattern: take the amazing, immense diversity of interests and potential future talents and skills, and homogenize them into only a narrowly-defined core with little choice or freedom and little say in how the system is run. This is a systematic deficiency from the top down which students and staff alike suffer under and could potentially spill over into the economy and the job market, with many graduating into a tough job market with few marketable skills. Having no social connections can make you even worse off, interestingly tying it into the show's themes of friendship making success possible. I can imagine that the writing crew had this in mind, given that many of them are parents, thus having the experience of being on the front lines of this system, and it's been demonstrated before that "Testing Testing 123" had a moral directly addressing the issue of different people learning by different methods. The society of Equestria presents an education reformist's wet dream: a world of boundless opportunity where school provides as much tutelage in a free realm of self-discovery as is necessary to provide for success in this world. For a long time, Equestria's respect for "special talents" had gone without a direct challenge. Thus, thanks to this episode and Starlight Glimmer being such a direct challenge to reinforce the concept, the show has really gained a lot of respect from me as it should from pretty much everyone who is passionate about this issue. It really gives me high hopes that they will take on modern societal issues like this in a cleverly allegorical manner garnering cross-generational appeal throughout Season 5 and beyond, as it should be the next logical step they take in making their morals more mature.
  10. The craziest thing about this has to be Starlight Glimmer's raw skill. Ironically to the point of her plan, she has many gifts and knows how to use them, and enacts a layered plan that shows an amount of foresight that would make King Sombra jealous. The fact that Starlight Glimmer managed to influence all of these ponies and kept them under control for so long is proof of that. Her plan was virtually flawless had it not been for her rudimentary cutie mark disguise. It is also implied that the other ponies may have voluntarily converted, so their sincere loyalty made them a collective force to be feared. Once the revelation came up that the Staff was a lie, we saw another layer of the plan. Glimmer had used every sort of psychological weapon; the threat of force, indoctrination, manipulation, etc., but the actual force itself was on Twilight's levels of potency and extremely dangerous. When intellectual and physical muscle are combined, defeating this force seems to be even more of an uphill battle. Starlight Glimmer calls to mind every great dictator in history with the full package she had; Caesar, Hitler, Stalin, Saddam, the Kims, etc. Power is nothing without might, and she definitely had it all. In all truth, @Dark Qiviut, you cannot have the song and the Orwellisms without an exceptionally twisted mastermind behind it to bring it all together, and that's what Starlight Glimmer was. She was the perfect despot, living by the delusion that she was doing right in the world by demoralizing ponies.

@Regulus, I'm younger than you and I definitely used them, up until the early/mid-2000s.

  12. Shady Daze. It's who I modeled my OC after. He also has a common model with three other background ponies, including Button Mash, but it's really the color schemes and the expressions that do it for me on Shady.
  13. This is a really, really hard choice. Sugar Belle is drop-dead adorable in her design and voice, even when she's under the spell and making nothing but muffins, muffins, muffins, muffins, and muffins. I guess she'd get my vote considering she owns that. Party Favor is for all intents and purposes another male Pinkie Pie, except with slightly reduced Cloudcuckoolander tendencies, and I find him more adorable than Cheese Sandwich. Double Diamond is just awesome, with the skiing and air drop and whatnot. We didn't get much of Night Glider, but her name instantly calls to mind this: https://youtu.be/PbnCQnDnfjs
  14. Starlight Glimmer is most definitely now a fugitive from justice probably about to be featured on the next episode of "Equestria's Most Wanted". She has been hinted to return in a future episode. With the way the show has been going, most open endings have been delivered upon, and characters with open-ended arcs have been returned. Ideally, I would want a lot of backstory in her return episode, and I'd like for it to focus equally on the search for her and what she's doing now. The Mane 6 would effectively add "detective" to their skills arsenal as they retrace Starlight's steps and recreate her rise to power in an attempt to track her down. Additionally, capitalizing on the dystopian theme of "The Cutie Map", I would want the theme of said episode to be laden with references to classics of another genre; film noir and detective fiction. Starlight Glimmer, overall, has a lot of potential in future appearances given the balance between what we already know about her and what we don't. I definitely hope we get to see her again.
  15. Apparently, some sort of magical Velcro. The pony and the cutie mark are not one and the same, but are so harmoniously connected to them that removing it would be that kind of dangerous. If they can be removed, then they aren't. Like any part of the body. It's akin to removing a leg or an eye to them; it can be removed, but you surely don't want it to be. Nothing is permanent. It apparently is like doing so. Stealing a pony's cutie mark kills all of their drive to do the things that made them unique. The last is a question that is hard to answer, because there has never been an adult blank flank or a pony who has voluntarily avoided getting a cutie mark (both of which would make great concepts for this show). There are fillies and colts under Starlight's influence, which may imply that even younger ponies before their cutie marks can fall to her influence as well, so it seems that not having one doesn't make a difference in that department. Mostly, ponies without cutie marks are fully occupied with getting one, for all of the symbolic things it represents; their individuality and talents. There is such a high value on self-concept in this world because of it. Dealing with the downsides of such a regime is something the show hadn't really explored until the premiere.
  16. They wouldn't have their own cutie marks under the influence Starlight Glimmer had, for sure. Having been a part of that town at such an early age would do damage to them that would take some time to reverse by teaching them Equestria's normal ways of life in a mainstream school. As for those who may have spent their entire lives in that town, maybe they'd end up as adult blank flanks, but as much as I would like to see that done in this show, it seems to have a strange aversion to portraying that.
  17. Nostalgia Critic, Tommy Oliver, RebelTaxi99, and Hewy Toonmore do it for me. Also used to like this guy called "The Hardcore Kid" (Headbanger142 on YouTube) but I don't know if he's around anymore since Blip cleaned out house.

I dunno; there's a lot to analyze and the show can get more and more interesting and thought-provoking the more you analyze it.

  20. The complete lack of clarity on Starlight Glimmer's true motivations can be summed up in one question: if she had a special talent, why did she use it for this purpose? Did she really believe her own stuff even if she knew she was being a hypocrite? She did justify her motives in saying that the retention of her magical power was necessary in order to enforce her doctrine. The WWII propaganda connection just did it. MLP has officially hit stratospheric levels of intellectualism. Video analysis is off-limits to me for the moment but will become a future consideration of mine if enough people from this community seem to be crossing over into it.
  21. I don't know how much I'd have to say this, but the town in the Season 5 premiere is not only allegorical to Communism. It is a commentary on our modern, corporate world just as much, or any society that in any way devalues the individual for collective gain, be it capitalistic or militaristic otherwise.
