I liked it. Her backstory never really bothered me like it did others, it's certainly not the greatest backstory in the world, but I think most of the problem with it is more it's presentation than anything else. The entirety of "The Cutie Re-mark" is all about the Butterfly effect, and how small, seemingly insignificant little changes can have massive effects, like how each time the Rainboom was stopped, the minor differences led to drastically different futures. The event with Sunburst gaining his mark and leaving is just like that, a seemingly small, insignificant event, causing such a big effect. I don't think Starlight turned evil because of this event alone, I think it's more so that this small moment affected the entire rest of her life and eventually made her who she is, this is the beginning, the event that really sticks in her mind but it isn't the whole story. I think the writer's could have done better by showing a few more bits of her life and seeing just how this event rippled out and affected her. Stupid, small things mess people up all the time, sometimes one tiny little comment is all it takes to rip somebody apart. I also liked how she stood down willingly of her own accord, compared to previous villains like NM/Luna or Sunset who reformed after some Harmony blasts, Starlight could have won and got what she wanted but willingly stopped. Her arc afterwards has also been pretty great, she's had some of my favorite episodes in the show and I like how she spent so much time struggling with her issues and how to be a good person, rather than just suddenly being "Good" now.

He wasn't the bottom rung of the dragons, no. But he knows his "Friends" would think his beat poetry is something that makes him weak and he's insecure about it, so he hides it so he doesn't get made fun of and so he can keep his good reputation with them. Now, Smolder is able to show her soft side and still keep them off her back from the start because she's confident and able to stand up for herself, unlike Garble. If his friends knew about his poetry earlier before this episode, he probably would have ended up in a way worse position, because of his insecurities.
-
In this case, Garble's "Friends" would pick on him just because he likes to make Beat Poetry and apparently has a sensitive side. There is an extent to which you shouldn't "Just be yourself" if yourself involves harmful habits or personality traits that actually harm or bother others, but there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with Garble's real personality, if anything the fake personality he put's on to look tough is actually way worse than what we saw of the "Real" him. You shouldn't have to suppress your passions and interests to be friends with people, and if they pick on and bully you for your interests, then they absolutely aren't your friends.

Has Fluttershy become the bravest of the Mane Six?
BastementSparkle replied to FirePuppy's topic in MLP:FiM Canon Discussion
She's been the bravest for a long time, ever since Dragonshy. The best examples of bravery aren't those who aren't afraid, but those who are, and yet are capable of standing up to do things anyway. Fluttershy has repeatedly fought against her fears again and again to do either what she wants to do, or what she needs to do, she's one brave mare. -
What I've learned over the past two years: There's no point in trying to make things better, because no matter what you do they'll just keep getting worse.

Ember forgetting pony names and getting ponies confused is just a gag, like how she kept getting Twilight and Starlight confused with each other back in "Triple Threat". Ember does know dragon eggs need heat, she just didn't realize the hatching grounds were cold in the first place. Lastly, Garble pushing around Spike is absolutely bullying him. He insults Spike on the regular, steals the blanket Spike made and plays keep away with it, pushes Spike into the lava or just knocks him around in general whenever he feels like it, despite the fact that Spike is obviously uncomfortable with all of this. I've experienced all that stuff myself as a kid, it was bullying when it happened to me, and it's bullying when it's happening to Spike.

Has the entire show been a waste of time and everything?
BastementSparkle replied to PCutter's topic in Sugarcube Corner
The only thing you proved by posting that is that some people are disappointed with Season 9, which is an opinion. Some people were also disappointed with Season 8, some with Season 7, some were disappointed as far back as Season 2. Some people never even disliked the show to begin with. By your logic, would that mean the whole show has always been a waste since as far back as Season 1? Inevitably any new entry in any franchise or series is going to disappoint someone, doesn't matter what the series is. I guess all entertainment is inevitably a waste then? You're getting too bothered by other peoples opinions, if you like Season 9 that's cool, so do I. So do plenty of other people in this thread alone, we clearly don't consider it a waste do we? So what if someone else does, that's unfortunate for them. -
Has the entire show been a waste of time and everything?
BastementSparkle replied to PCutter's topic in Sugarcube Corner
What makes you think the "Majority" hate it or are disappointed? Do you have any statistics on that or something? Most responses I've seen have been relatively positive in general, and while it's not exactly a large sample size, the polls for all the episodes so far on this site are majority "Liked/loved it" for all of the episodes so far. Even if the negativity is the majority, you are definitely not "One of the very few", I can guarantee that. I'm also willing to bet though, that the majority don't actually hate this season, and what you're seeing instead is a vocal minority. It's important to keep in mind that those who are unhappy or dissatisfied will often speak up the loudest and most often, and that can make it seem like their opinion is more common than it actually is. Also, no. Even if a lot of fans are unhappy, that doesn't mean the whole show was a waste of time. One bad season does not ruin a whole show, it doesn't somehow get rid of the previous good the show has done. Plus, plenty of fans are still happy, so how can the show be a waste then, just because it upset some people? -
Disappointed in S9 so far.
BastementSparkle replied to CastletonSnob's topic in MLP:FiM Canon Discussion
That could be said about almost anything really. Though I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you myself. Just I've seen a few people seemingly miss they were only doing what she asked and lay the blame for things solely on them. -

How are the slice of life episodes "Filler"? The show has always been primarily slice of life, they aren't really filler. Just gonna point out, that's basically what Yona asked for. Rarity originally wanted to make her stand out but Yona requested help with "Fitting in" so that's what they did. It's not like they tried to push anything on her she didn't specifically want. -
It's alright, you made some good points too. I don't think it was particularly patronizing, but I can see how it might come across that way to someone.

I know what wanting to "Fit in" is like. I've pretty much spent my whole life simultaneously wanting to fit in and also wanting to be unique and am basically a socially anxious wreck with no outward personality anymore because of it. Anyway, I can see your point about it being potentially patronizing, seeming like they've changed everything just for Yona. I suppose the way I see it though is that the changes they made to the event overall seem like good changes. It's based on the Ponyville tradition, sure, but it's something more unique for the school which contains more than just ponies and is meant to teach friendship to all creatures. It's not the kind of environment where you want to make others feel like they have to be like ponies to fit in. If they'd changed Ponyville itself's traditions, I think it'd have been worse.

I'd just like to point out, it wasn't the actual tradition. The tradition itself is a Ponyville thing, this was the school's own version and was basically a separate thing from the actual event, so it's not like they changed the actual original tradition itself, just the school's own new event that was based on it, which I think is actually a good idea, as the new changed version fits the school better in this case. I think she does fit in? You don't have to be totally conforming to "Fit in", yeah she's so not like the ponies, but neither are any of the other non-pony students, that doesn't mean they don't fit in.

Yona wasn't making "Harmless compromises" to be more in harmony with her surroundings, she completely changed everything about herself. She changed the way she talked, the way she dressed, the kind of things she said. Learning more about pony culture and how the dance works is all fine, Sandbar even seemed kind of excited that she knew how to do the dances, she could have learned more about the dance traditions and how to participate without totally removing her individuality for it. Yona already fits in just fine being Yona as she already is, there's no reason for her to change that, other than she felt she had to, to be a good partner for Sandbar. She wasn't having trouble getting along with others or "Fitting in" in the first place.

Anybody else hate coffee and alcohol?
BastementSparkle replied to Fluttershutter's topic in General Discussion
I hate alcohol. I've got two alcoholics for parents who have both spent like 70-80% of my life drunk or at the very least tipsy and it's essentially put me off of alcohol forever. I find it really hard to understand the appeal of it, as it often tastes bad and also alters your mental state and makes you act ridiculous too, often in ways that are really uncomfortable or even a little bit scary. I don't want to judge anyone, but I just don't get it, or why it's so widespread. I like coffee personally though, and it's certainly not for social reasons as I enjoy my coffee best all alone in the mornings. It helps me wake up and is also kind of "Soothing" in a weird way, and I've always liked the taste from the moment I first tried it. Flavored coffee's can be pretty nice too.
