Welp, I'm back!1 Maybe. idk.
Now, it's been a while since I've reviewed something. My last MLP review was in October with my review of Crusaders of the Lost Mark (wow, Doc and Marty didn't even get to the future at that time) and my last review in general was my Undertale review in December.. which I suppose isn't too bad, but still. I was kind of caught up with my school finals, plus I had a lot of stuff going on in my personal life and i was too busy playing Undertale xd that I started to lack motivation for reviews in general. But after a hiatus from MLP reviews, I decided to review something!1
I know the Hooffields and the McColts is kind of a weird place to start back up again, since it's not the episode after the one I reviewed in my last review, but I decided, instead of going through the episodes in order, I should first look back at the ones I have more to say about and sort of "finalized" my opinions on, and then look back at some of the others at a later date. The last batch of S5 episodes didn't really give me enough to say about (heck, I still haven't made a full opinion of Scare Master yet), so I might as well just do that!
So, without further ado, let's look at the Hooffields and the McColts.
This review comes from the opinions of the poster himself. This does not reflect the opinions of the rest of the Brony community. Summary: Twilight and Fluttershy are sent to the Smokey Mountains to settle a feud between 2 families known as the Hooffields and the McColts
Gotta say, I like the historical references in this episode. In case you're wondering, the whole plot and setting is based off a long feud between families called the Hatfields and McColts, and they even got the part about the Tennessee Smokey Mountains. So, that's a plus, as it sort of teaches this story to a newer generation. And I also like how the episode tells us the effects this feud had on the animal life in the valley between the 2 mountains due to the fighting getting in the way, leading to lack of food for the animals.
But, gotta say that's about it as far as positives are concerned. So, what are some of the negatives? *sigh*
For one, Twilight feels incredibly shoehorned in this episode. I mean, let's review all of the important things she did in this episode:
What was that? You clicked the spoiler button but nothing appeared? Yeah, well, there's kind of a reason for that. Well, okay, she freezes the ponies with her magic so Fluttershy can talk.. I guess that's something..? I hear a lot of Twilicorn haters say that Twilight Sparkle is always the one who does everything most of the time, mostly in her shared episodes, and her friends never really get to shine, but, well, here's an example of an episode where Twilight basically does nothing of importance and after 10 minutes or so of that and then finally Fluttershy's role comes up and it solves everything. At least with the other map episodes is that the 2 characters sent to whatever place had at least a slight bit of importance and they made use see what the point of the characters going to the locations would be. In The Lost Treasure of Griffonstone, Pinkie Pie tried talking to Gilda about Griffonstone and was the one who realized what was really "lost" in Griffonstone and Rainbow Dash getting stuck made Gilda save her and also realize that. In Made in Manehattan, as meh as it was, at least Rarity and Applejack made a team effort, and we found out why Applejack was called. Here, it's plain obvious that Fluttershy's going to be the one that helps out. It doesn't really help either that Twilight Sparkle's also pretty flanderized in this episode. In fact, Rainbow Dash making fun of her in The Lost Treasure of Griffonstone actually got her character better than her actual character in this episode. In this entire episode, she's trying to refer to her books so she can solve this fued and maybe Fluttershy's advice. For the Princess of Friendship, this makes her seem flanderized and idiotic, plus she could've probably even thought about some of the previous things she learned in the past to help here to help her settle this feud, but she doesn't! For most if not all of this episode, she's essentially like "uhh they need help settling this feud? mabe dis random book on frendship will help solv et xdd."
The pacing in this episode doesn't help either. The plot alone does feel like something better suited for an 11 minute cartoon episode, but the way they drag it out is by having Twilight trying to find the answers in her books, because despite it being one of Twilight's worst moments and huge flanderization on her end, it's the one "plot point" that the writers choose to fill and drag this episode with, because it was obviously funny the first time (sarcasm pls), so let's run it so into the ground that it goes on the exact opposite side of Earth and leaves the Earth's atmosphere. Yeah, it gets old really quickly.
Not to mention, while I like the historical references, the Hooffields and McColt family members really aren't that interesting of characters. They're essentially redneck stereotypes and their personalities are just really bland. The only ones that actually have some sort of personality and characterization are the main ponies of the family, Daddy McColt and Ma Hooffield, and even then they're not really
Plus, the ending feels really rushed. For a feud that's lasted so long, it pretty much just goes like "ogm the animals dont liek u fiteing" "ok sry" and then, poof, every problem that went through the Hooffields and the McColts went away.. like magic!1 Not to mention, the whole backstory between their fight makes it feels like the McColts were actually the ones who did something bad by Piles building the house over the patch of land he knew Grub was using for his garden, which doesn't help to make it feel like they were both in the wrong.
Overall Opinions: Uhh.. this episode was okay I guess..! you know what, who am i kidding, this one sucked. While I liked the historical references and use of the animals for the plot, that's all that this episode really has, and it's all overshadowed by the poor characterization, bad pacing and rushed resolution, with the overall dull and boring atmosphere of this episode being the cherry on top of this shit cake. While I wouldn't say it's on the same level of badness as Boast Busters and Rainbow Falls, I'd definitely say this is my least favorite episode of S5 (either this or Do Princesses Dream of Magic Sheep. i know, controversial choice) and is on my Top 10 least favorite episodes of MLP. So overall, I don't like one, but that shouldn't be a surprise
3/10
