  1. I just wanted to give the community a heads up that beginning March 1 Events will be launching regular contests again. Starting with visual art, and continuing with musical, writing, and banner based contests. As you may have noticed our Events Calendar is displaying the upcoming Event as an Art Contest. I have also devised a way to eliminate bias in several of the panel judged contests so that it doesn't become a popularity contest by aligning with a few prominent Twitter Artists who will rotate as guest judges. This will also be paired with a blind submission process where any community voted contest will not include the name of the artist entering. Keep an eye out in Events for the theme announcement, rules, rewards, and submission process of the March Visual Art Contest.
  2. Peter Percival McButtercrunch IV. Who invented indoor plumbing?
  3. On a closing note I loved this years Pie Challenge. I have a lot things in the air right now, but I’d love to cut this together into one video set to Ode to Joy and host it on our YouTube channel. But priorities first.
  4. I know what you meant. My answer is the same. There is no need. Only a desire shared by enough people. Being able to change your display name is a common function in most software, and it’s by default a function in the software that powers MLPF. I look at it the same way as changing the avatar. I don’t pick my name or avatar for the benefit of anyone else, I do so because it’s something that I want to do. Whenever someone has told me that they wish I didn’t update my avatar, I thought that statement was absolutely ballsy of them to make. Anyway, almost every one of the top ten visited forums and only communities allow change of the member facing display or username. It’s by far more common that it isn’t, and almost expected by most users these days. The only time I would question someone changing their display name would be on LinkedIn, but that’s pretty apparent why changing your name there would strange since it’s supposed to match your IRL name. I apologize for being blunt, but it’s really nobody’s business what the motivation is. That’s the wonderful thing about whimsy. It can be for any reason or no reason at all. Also since I’ve been here … nearly 9 years now … I’ve seem some creepers who really don’t know how not to keep their distance when asked. If I can add a little cognitive dissonance to the stalky mcstalkersons out there, it’s been a good day for me.
  5. There is no mandate that people change display names. If you are asking why users feel the drive to modify their display names, that is beyond the scope of this announcement. All I know is that it is popular, people enjoy it, and we use it for our donation drive to humorous effect.

    BABSCon 2023

    until
BABSCon site link The annual Bay Area pony convention is returning this Easter Weekend as usual. If you are coming you may be able to hunt down @Jeric, @Troblems, and @Ashen Pathfinder. Even if you can't attend, there will be ways that the Forum community can participate remotely. Stay tuned. Guests of Honor
  7. Going forward users will not be able to see the display name history of a user on the profile. This is unfortunately a universal configuration. It’s all or nothing. I’ll actually be making a point to request Invision add a user option configuration in a future software release. I do rather prefer the account holder having control of this. There are pros and cons to both leaving the display visible or hidden and at the end of the day, hiding that detail does add a little more personal privacy of the user while also allowing us to better preserve the Cast Character initiative. Just wanted to let you know. And yes staff can still see the history.
  8. Unfortunately I come bearing rather unfortunate news. Though I communicated a topic that we have to undergo some changes to badges, this may not have been communicated correctly to the events team in due to my abrupt medical leave. The result is that several users were offered individualized badges, which runs counter to how the new badge system will work, as well as the general design language I am working on. As this is my failure I will try and come up with an appropriate make good. Also please remember that any digital prize won here will not show until the new system is up and running, ideally that will be a few weeks, but that time line assumes I am not having to step in on anything else. Thank you.
  9. As promised I’m beginning the work on the new Achievements system. This will necessitate me shutting down the old system. To you, it will look like your badges are gone. They aren’t. Absent a catastrophic failure like what happened to the RP database that broke our entire tech team into weeping children, I’ll be able to move them over manually to the new system. I’m doing this because I know how much this means to you. The Engineer and Manager in me wants me to tell you to save the badges and they are just going away and we are starting over. Hopefully this works and the new system will be fully functional soon. Give me up to two weeks. so, Sunday the badges will vanish. Do not panic. Thank you.
  10. Okay all, at some point this weekend I will be taking down the old Awards system while I work on the styling and migration changes. Just wanted to give you a heads up that I’m doing what I promised last month.

BABSCON 2023 BRINGS THE OWL MAGIC WITH SARAH-NICOLE ROBLES Published on Feb 16, 2023 In keeping with recent tradition here at BABSCon, we’re bringing in another envoy to Equestria from a friendly land. This time, from The Boiling Isles, we’re bringing The Owl House’s own Luz Noceda, Sarah-Nicole Robles! 12. Stay tuned. There will be an announcement how users can pay for autographs and I’ll get them done.
  13. Well … they did it Thanks to any who contributed
  14. Here is a message from the con that is most certainly happening and most certainly going to be great! We’re going to start our Guest of Honor announcements for BABSCon 2023 in the best way with best yak, Yona. Making her first-ever appearance at BABSCon, it’s Katrina Salisbury! In addition to voicing the most excitable of the Student Six on My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, Katrina has used her considerable talents for characters including Nico Niyama on Kiznaiver, Inmate 43B on Tooth and Tail, and Angela on Tobot. Give her a follow on Twitter and Instagram. So register now and book your room to come see Katrina and our upcoming Guests of Honor as we indulge in some nostalgia this April 7–9 at BABSCon 2023. @Ashen Pathfinder @Troblems you two ready to get yelled at in the most adorable way possible? Yaks are best at yelling!
  15. Nah. It’s working. We don’t have a hug emoji. Emojis are usually emotions expressed on face. Reactions are their own system. @Rikifive has an appropriate image for Twilight’s face hugging itself.
  16. I miss you Kitten.

  17. Alright. I’ll be working on this next starting tomorrow. Thanks for your patience everyone Not too late at all. I’ll use him over Lyra
  18. Disney is probably fine with their cut of the distribution since it’s as close to passive income as you can get in the exhibition domain.
  19. I still adore Star Wars, and generally having more fun after the Disney acquisition than before the Disney acquisition. The OT remains mostly God Tier fantasy. The PT, Solo, and ST have significant issues, but have some really interesting choices. Rebels, Mando, Clone Wars conclusion, Bad Batch, Doctor Aphra, Darth Vader, Thrawn, High Republic, and Jedi: Fallen Order are great stories well told. Book of Bobo Fett and Obi-Wan were enjoyable in several episodes so I consider them a success. Andor is a goddamn masterpiece of television and Star Wars content. Depending on its second season it may actually top the OT. I now have a greater appreciation of Rogue One characters and look forward to seeing what we only heard about in Rebels. Oh. I consume every comic, movie, show, and book in this IP. While the Lucas originals and later seasons of Clone Wars were solid, the other media only has one or two highs, as opposed to what Marvel and Del Rey are doing. Not only is the IP more lucrative today, it’s generally churning out more stories that I love. Mando 3 and Ahsoka should be phenomenal (I trust Filoni), and this season of Bad Batch is building well from where we left off of. Hasbro, on the other hand, seemingly refuses to finish the 96 in the TVC line, doesn’t balance the scales with the BS offerings, keeps putting out garbage Haslab crowdsourcing when we have said time and again … give us a Sandcrawler or Ghost … nobody wants Revas blasted saber. Unlike pony, I’m deep in the Star Wars community, especially the collecting side of things. Very few things can turn a crap day until a amazing day than a group chat about Kenner memories, or great sculpt from Hot Toys. Seeing a 12 Back A SKU will always make my eyes widen like most collectors who know what that is. Since we don’t have that font installed on the server. MTFBWY
  20. Not likely. He is a genius at adapting to his surroundings, and reading people, so he would likely have no problem with avoiding sexual harassment.
  21. Interesting. My wife loves this show. Many parents about my age who had kids around the same time seem to have a show or two they enjoyed when their kids were watched. For me that was many shows. Some include A:TLAB, F&F, MLP:FiM. I personally prefer most shows that have 2-3 seasons and end on a high note. Disney generally does a decent job with this, even cancelling critically acclaimed shows and under-merchandising them, which is surprising since they are a money generating super organization, but they are one of the only big media corporations that was able to increase their share and net asset value year over year, so I can’t fault the results. Even when a story doesn’t land for me, they usually have someone in the pipeline that does. Still, a revival is a really odd move for them. Interesting indeed.

    On Hold

I posted this in the announcement regarding upcoming features. I won’t give an ETA because, this is a volunteer thing and my wife, my health, kid, grandkids, career, and friends come first. I love you all, but I’m only here when all of those things have nothing outstanding that I could do. In the past I’ve been flexible about timing. That isn’t happening anymore. I will launch this when and only when I have caught up with prior obligations. Thank you for understanding.
  23. For years we have utilized the Awards system to give our badges for participation in events. Soon I will be moving badges previously earned to the Achievements system. Awards is a paid-for enhancement add-on that I pay for every six months, and Invision created the Achievements enhancement built-in, which can do the same thing but it’s part of the main package so … yay less cost to me. Achievements has most of the same abilities as Awards, but what we lose in one we can in another. I’ll be doing a lot of this in the background, but wanted people to know that any oddities that they note with Awards from prior events will be housed somewhere else. As I start wrapping this up, I’ll make a full announcement of how it works when the Events Team is trained up on it. It’s an exciting change that someone of you will probably appreciate a lot. I won’t give an ETA because, this is a volunteer thing and my wife, my health, kid, grandkids, career, and friends come first. I love you all, but I’m only here when all of those things have nothing outstanding that I could do. In the past I’ve been flexible about timing. That isn’t happening anymore.
  24. Like shipping, the depths of this topic are extremely interesting, and not that surprising. Crushes on fictional characters have some pretty strong roots in how we process emotions, what we desire, our idealized self, idealized partner, and how art impacts us as a species. Whether it’s Rhett Butler, Rick Blaine, Sabrina Spellman, or Twilight Sparkle, humans have been crushing on fictional characters longer than anyone here has been alive. As @The Wife of Sabo said, the reasons vary as to what brings about a crush. I would imagine it’s pretty similar to an IRL attraction for some. Someone about the person’s look/design, voice, personality, etc. catches their attention and emotions go from there. Fictional crushes do not happen to the exclusion of a real interpersonal romantic relationship. I’ve been married twice, and have/had a healthy relationship with both. I’ve also experienced the allure of a well-crafted fictional character in all forms of media (text, live action, gaming, animation). While most are human, one or two are not. For me, I’m built to fall for the personality and intellect first. It’s/was the same with my spouses. My current wife has a great affinity for anti-hero bad boy types like Jackson on Sons of Anarchy, so she isn’t immune either. I think as long as we have this drive as a species to make and consume art, humans will always fall for fictional characters at some level.
