Hm. Past a two-parter is something I wouldn't mind seeing but Shimmering pretty much made sense of things. 

I certainly wish I could help. But I don't have Paypal or credit/debit, nor do I have the money to contribute. But I'll do what little I can to drive up donations. Whether it means posting a status update or whatever is needed. I'll help however I can mods, just let me know what I can do!

No worries. If you have money to give or not, helping in any way is just as important. 

I think badges should be earned and the current system for them is logical. If they weren't based on actual count, then it would make sense to pick which one you'd want. There's just more practicality this way.
