    What a monster of a weekend, my crowd! :BornAgainBrony:

    First off, SO much has been revealed. The cast of the Super Mario movie has been announced, and we got our first look at the Netflix live action Cowboy Bebop. One of these might just make you laugh your butt off! The other, well if you're like me, you might have mixed feelings about it.

    Spoiler

    And in other news... I saw the G5 movie! :fluttershy:

    It was... Okay. I clearly don't love it as much as others do, but I can see why everyone loves it.
    So if you're going to watch it, please don't be like me. Let the new generation speak for itself. Watch it as if this new generation is its own thing. Don't get hung up on its connection to G4.

    I went into this wanting some questions answers; questions relating to G4. I'll put it behind a spoiler tag for now.
    If you're going to talk spoilers, please put it in a spoiler tag so that's hidden.

    Spoiler
    • Is it good?
    • It's all right. It has good moments. There's a feel-good happy ending. However... I have many issues with it, but those issues are because this movie is trying to do two things at once. They are trying to provide some pandering to G4 fans; but mostly this movie is trying to do its own thing, therefore it leaves so many questions the G4 continuity unanswered, which weighs the movie down a little. They probably just wanted to have a passing-the-baton moment, but I don't think it worked as well as they think it does.
    • Were the male characters portrayed well?
    • ABSOLUTELY YES! Best part of the new gen. We have an earth stallion as part of the main group, and he actually contributes! He's not just the token male, nor is he a useless idiot for the movie to dump on. He's actually competent! It takes a moment for Hitch to come around, but that's because he was torn between two mindsets. Sprout, sadly, was the worse; but considering the life he grew up into, you totally understand why. I wish the red pony could have been a better character, but you totally understand why he fell from grace, and maybe he could redeem himself in the series! We even saw a fatherly stallion and strong, intimidating stallion.
    • Is G4 canon?
    • I think it is? I was willing to consider the toys and everything else of Twilight & Friends a coincidence, but the Pegasi had an old Wonderbolts poster. Kind of makes it harder to call it a coincidence at that point...
    • Are the G4 ponies based on FIM or Pony Life?
    • I think they are mostly based on FIM, but it's hard to tell. Twilight mentioned something about going on an adventure, and that's not usually what they did in FIM? Yes, they did go on adventures, but mostly out of duty and importance. The Pony Life ponies cared more about adventure for adventure sake. But whatever! The animation for them was good, their dialogue was based on a childhood story, and therefore I can shrug off the odd parts and pretend I'm seeing the actual Mane Six one last time.
    • Did they answer what happened to Twilight and everything that happened during her rule as princess?
    • No, not really. This is both sad and good. I REALLY wanted this movie to answer everything. There is still a chance that the upcoming TV show could, but leaving everything unanswered makes it harder for me to recommend this movie and the series. The writers will really have to prove they understand the old material, and I fear they don't. From the books about Twilight and her friends all the way to the non-pony races that came together in peace, there is just too much stuff missing in action for the 3 pony races to be THIS divided, even if hundreds of years have passed. How is it only one Earth pony, Sunny's dad, was able to do some research and discover the truth? What made all the races turn their backs on history in the first place? Where are the other races?
    • Would this movie have worked better as its own thing instead of a continuation of G4?
    • Yes; absolutely so. They invented something new, the crystals of the 3 pony races. Uniting them and the three pony races brought magic back to the world, and it could help explain the reason why magic is abundant in all of Equestria. More then that, I love how this new gen shows that even an Earth pony can potentially become an alicorn. Corporeal wings & horn FTW! However, because this story is picking up long after the events of G4, it just has a harder time standing on its own. It would have been so much better if it was just its own thing. In fact, you could have EASILY changed some key details and it would have still been the same movie. You could have changed the Wonderbolts poster to something else. Sunny's toys could have been generic Earth, Pegasus, and Unicorn toys. The appearance of Twilight's cutie mark could have been a nice little coincidence!
    • Hopes for the TV series?
    • Where do I begin? I want them to really answer all the questions, to neatly tie up every loose end and tell us how the world went from the end of G4 to hundreds of years later in G5. However, if this movie is any example of how things will go, I imagine the TV series will want to do its own thing as well, and we'll be lucky if they mention G4 in passing at best. This is not the energy you want to have if you are trying to bring old fans into the new generation. So now I feel like I'm back to square one. I am just as curious about the TV series as I was about the movie. I want to know more, but this time, I am cautiously curious. I am not super thrilled about the TV series; and that's sad because I should be; because this movie should have MADE me thrilled about it.

    But that's all I have to say. The movie was fun, some of the songs were good, and I really like Hitch, Sunny, and Izzy. Zipp is okay too. They'll be the best parts of the next TV show, for sure. :BrightMacContent:

    Take care, my crowd! B)

      I liked the movie.  It’s not G4, not even close, but it was enjoyable.

      Spoiler

      That said I really didn’t like the unanswered questions it left us with. I’m gonna be patient because I feel like they did so intentionally for the show coming out, but if they don’t answer the questions in the show either then I won’t like it at all.

      So whether I continue to like G5 or not depends on how they go about this in the future.

      I thought the ending was fine, but I do wonder how it'll play out in the TV series. I do have some theories, but I'm holding back for now. And sorry the intro with the Mane Six was cut off. :adorkable: Maybe they will be mentioned a few more times in the TV show, if we are lucky.

      @Astral Soul

      Hello, my friend! And yes it is. :fluttershy: Crazy to think that tea was discovered  by accident.\

      @Kujamih

      Indeed it is. The stage is set, and the players are ready.

      @AppleButt

      I am glad we have similar thoughts, my friend. But more importantly, I am glad you enjoyed the movie more than me. :twi:
