How goes it, my crowd?
I resumed watching Gridman this week. Been putting it off for too long, and wow did I return to a mixed bag. I'll tell you all more about it tomorrow.
Also, this will hopefully be the last time I talk about those G5 2D designs until we get any major updates, but... Does anyone remember the OTHER 2D shots? The ones that were made to promote the merchandise? You know, [THESE]. Why couldn't that have been the official 2D designs? They look just as easy to animate, they seem way more faithful to the movie's designs, and they are a lot easier on the eyes. I REALLY want to know who made these images.
EDIT: I just saw the cover reveal for the G5 comic book series. Even that looks more faithful! And I bet the art in the actual pages will too.
That's all for now. Take care, my crowd.

Makes me wonder if Spike also has finger prints.
I don't remember seeing any official art of them in a G4 style. If it exists, I never saw it, sorry.
Feel free to link me to it, if you can find it again.
To answer your question, I think the show runners want to separate themselves from G4's recognizable animation style by having one of their own. However, there is such a thing as going too far away, and lots of people are a bit tired of CalArts style by now.
Take care, buddy.

@Samurai Equine Now that I think of it, I think these were only for merch purposes.
But I still would've loved if they used these designs.
They look like the G4 movie!

Oh my gosh, that style is adorable! I love it even more!
So many missed opportunities in terms of 2D animation styles.
