Hello there, my crowd! Welcome to my Weekly Musings: Red Edition.
[I ❤ JAPAN] -- [I ❤ THE COLOR RED] -- [I ❤ CELESTIA]
Feel free to leave a song request. Your song will eventually be featured in a future Weekly Musings entry!
Yeah, it's another weekly update that's a day late. But considering what happened, then I think it should be understandable. Let's talk about it, shall we? Also, strap in, this is a long one...
For those who missed the news, my grandfather-in-law (the only grandfather I have ever known, the one I called pepaw) passed away. His health had gotten so bad that he had to be admitted to a nursing home. His family tried to get him a private room, but they didn't have one at the time, so he had to share a room with someone else. They admitted him on either Thursday or Friday, my mother and I visited him on Saturday, and he died Sunday morning. He passed away in his sleep. This nursing home was suppose to be the same one my grandmother (memaw) would have gone to, if she had lived long enough, so it's only naturally he wanted to go there. (I'm kind of hoping pepaw's family will be able to get some kind of financial reimbursement since he wasn't there that long; it'll help with any funeral plans.) This man lived a long life, well into his 90's. He helped make me into the hard, honest worker that I am. Now he can be in heaven with memaw, my aunt, and all those he use to love that are no longer with us.
RIP Neil Hall, pepaw.
Don't worry about me, though.
I spent Sunday with my family, mostly my mother. I was sad, but I'll be fine now. Also, when I picked up groceries on Monday, I was surprised to find additional food I did not order! It was fruits. I called the grocery store to let them know, but they told me it was okay and that I could keep them. It's the little things that matter sometimes. Bills were so high that I've run out of money. I can't even go out to eat like I sometimes do. Having that extra fruit made all the difference in getting me to the next paycheck.
If you're wondering why my grandfather-in-law's family didn't come visit him, it's because everyone has COVID right now. My two uncles caught it, and the sons from pepaw's side of the family have also caught it. There is a new strain going around. Thankfully, it's not deadly enough to put anyone in a hospital nor kill anyone, just makes you sick for a while (seriously, this is the version of COVID we should have gotten). My mother and I were the only ones healthy enough to go visit him and tell him what the situation was. When we visited him, he had a slight, dry cough. There is a chance pepaw also caught this new COVID, but there's no way to prove it and it doesn't matter anymore.
Either way, 2020-2022 can easily be described as the worst set of years ever. Not just because COVID and the pandemic, but I lost a dear family member on each of those years. Some of which, you could argue, passed before their time.
Since I am on sad news, this might be kind of selfish of me to bring it up, but I lost weeks upon days upon hours of gameplay in Pokemon Omega Ruby and Sapphire. There was a brief moment where I could have saved the data, but it was a perfect storm of crap, and I had to delete everything to help free up space on my ever shrinking C drive. It wasn't until a little later that I downloaded a much needed Disk Cleaner program. It helps, and maybe I can learn something from all this. But mostly, I'll be saving up to upgrade my PC so that I won't have to worry about this in the future.
And here I thought having a 2nd internal storage drive would actually be a good thing. I know it's just a bunch of 1's and 0's, but still... RIP Queen Awesome (Torchic), Della Psy (Psyduck), Jawsome Lady (Mawile), Wiggle Bit (Masquerain), Shellburn (Torkoal), Celestia (Solrock), and countless many more... But now that I know how to avoid the space-related problems I had before, I am thinking of maybe playing a different Pokemon game. Maybe something new?
SUPERHUMAN SAMURAI SYBER SQUAD!
This is it, everyone. The final batch of episodes. Check below for my summary of the series.
- Episode 48, donde está la biblioteca? MOTW footage comes from Gridman 23. Most of the plot is original, but just like in the Japanese counterpart, Kilo and Malcom are attacking Servo directly this time. Acceptor pose too! Ooh, but Kilo called our hero “Servo Sam”, even though he shouldn't know Servo's identity. Are jocks being too macho to ask for help/tutoring actually a thing? And no healing scene. The lesson learned at the end of the episode was kind of forced; stinks of writer's convenience. Attacking the main hero directly is suppose to be a big deal story-wise. It's a tough call to judge this one, but Gridman at least knew better not to bog down the serious A plot with a humorous, unnecessary B plot. By a slim margin, Gridman wins.
- Episode 49, school's out for evil! MOTW footage comes from Gridman 6. Story is original. I don't know what's sillier; a music fairy or an anti-virus program that is just as monstrous as the megavirus monsters. It seems Malcom knows who Team Samurai is after all, even though he shouldn't? Did I miss an episode? No healing scene. This sudden development just made the show stupid. Despite questionable reasons for being in summer school, and the typical set up this show is known for, this episode ended up being huge! Tanker finally admitted his feelings for Syd, Servo was in danger and needed a new program, and Syd had to come to terms with not being perfect all the time. The counterpart was just too silly to ever take seriously. SSSS wins.
- Episode 50, odd ball job. MOTW footage comes from Gridman 28 (again). Story is original. Lucky's being framed for robbery. On top of that, he's wresting with feelings of failure. No healing scene. This ended up being a great character piece for Lucky, and the episode played it straight forward instead of going for as many laughs as possible. The ideas here could easily be transmuted into a Gridman episode. Speaking of, I'd rather watch this over seeing Takeshi perv over Yuka way too hard. SSSS wins.
- Episode 51, multiverse mayhem? I mean they don't call it that, but that's what parallel realities are. I can't believe we had to wait for the anime to explore this angle better. Plot has no Japanese counterpart. MOTW is from Gridman 18 (again!). I am glad to see Malcom once again trying to attack Servo personally. It's awesome seeing these actors do role reversals again, but I guess Kilo is just a universal constant. Gotta say, Sam is very mature as he explores this alternate reality; doesn't try to force it to be just like his own or anything. And smart Jennifer is way more capable than regular Syd. No healing scene. All in all, this was a great episode! In times like this, gotta toss the adaptation a bone. SSSS wins.
- Episode 52, star fame? All things in balance, I guess. Gridman had an episode about a female celebrity secretly in town, and SSSS has an episode about a male celebrity who is not in hiding at all. MOTW footage comes from Gridman 14 (again). I feel a little insulted that a basketball star got temporarily inducted into Team Samurai, but the fully capable hacker in Gridman got nothing. After such a long hiatus, the healing scene is back! Was Tarpon London also a celebrity in real life? This episode was goofy as can be, but otherwise solid. It's Japanese counterpart was not as silly, but it somehow messed with time to tell it's story. Since this episode had a more believable premise, SSSS wins.
- Episode 53, not my sunspot. A story that takes place outside for once?! I'm dreaming! Also, how poetic. Last episode of SSSS uses MOTW footage from Gridman 1 (again). Plot is original, Malcom is actually making a plot that threatens the world for once, and everything seems like events that could potentially happen in Gridman. You know, when Kahn Digifer makes an announcement to the world, it's a big thing. When Kilo Kahn does it, it's a Tuesday. The biggest middle finger to the audience is having Tanker turn into Servo. They broke their own rules to make it happen with some half-baked logic, and even if I accepted it, Sam wasn't there to properly pass the torch. At the very least, we get a taste of Team Samurai as just a trio, like Team Grid. Yay healing scene! Sam's actor was credited here, but for some reason he wasn't in this episode besides flashback footage. Kilo is still credited to Tim Curry, yet his voice sounds oddly different, as if voiced by an imitator? Either way, this episode ended the way I was afraid of, no definitive ending between Servo and Kilo. The holiday special came closer. Sad to think that only the Japanese show had a definitive ending. It's not really fair to compare a first episode with a last, but I just don't like the way they made Tanker turn into Servo. It's splitting hairs, but Gridman wins.
[ 1 / 5 ] Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad: A Similar Superhero Series Scrapped. If I could describe my journey through the TV show Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad in simple terms, I would use the following three words: Surprise, disappointment, and dissatisfaction. I have felt all those feelings many times for many reasons. I watched and finished the original Gridman, thinking that it was okay but easily a bar that could be met or surpassed by a US adaptation. People have said this show was very faithful to its Japanese counterpart, so expectations were a little high. I returned to SSSS having only seen 1 VHS of it as a kid, and also having a faint clue of how the series ended. Still, I wanted to into this with fresh eyes and take in the series as a whole for once. The questions I had to ask were simple: Does it hold up over time? Did they commission new footage for the adaptation? Does it have a definitive ending? Which show is better? These questions and more were looming in my head before watching a single episode.
[ 2 / 5 ] In a way, SSSS started out really good with lots of promise. They were instantly constrained by a lack of filming locations (less than what Mighty Morphin Power Rangers used back in the day), and they insisted on centering just about every plot around the high school instead of the bigger world outside. However, it's about the quality of the story, not so much the cinematography. Built on the DNA of the original, SSSS had some good plots with some intrigue going in, and they payed homage to Tsuburaya/Ultraman by having the other kids of Team Gridman be the pilots of the Assist Vehicles instead of controlling them remotely in the real world. Solid beginning, but after the show set up their own sets of status quo, things settled into their own brand of humor. Not better, not worse, just a different brand of humor than what you may have seen. Also, the show is a time capsule of the 90's. Some things do not hold up over time, other things were bad upon arrival. I won't say which show better reflects the early 90's, because I think both were good enough for their respective cultures. But which show is better?
[ 3 / 5 ] By sheer comparison alone, Gridman is the better show by a score of 28 to 24, with one disqualification since SSSS had a flashback/clipshow episode with no plot. In the event of a tie, I decided to let SSSS have it as a victory; but even if I gave that last point to SSSS (which I doubt I would), it wouldn't make a difference. Still, it was a pretty tight comparison. Which means that Gridman is only slightly better, but in an interesting (or a predictable way). Gridman managed to tell a tighter, complete story with a definitive ending in 39 episodes. SSSS had 53, more than the usual standard TV series run in Japan (most toku shows tend to have about 50 episodes), yet failed to give the show a definitive ending. Worst of all, because of the show's insisted constrictions, the humor was at times too much, the show would hardly raise the steaks for our heroes, and world building would sometimes fall apart. Remember, I didn't think Gridman was all that great at first; plenty of room for improvement. Yet, the Japanese show ended up telling better, tighter stories and wrapping things up when they knew they were done.
[ 4 / 5 ] As I feared, SSSS recycled stock footage from Gridman, some select episodes getting used as three times! And yet despite this, the adaptation did not use every episode of Gridman, nor did they commission new footage from Tsuburaya. The few times there were cold openings, they indeed used more Gridman episodes, but not all of them. Not sure why they skipped some pieces of source footage, and we'll probably never know. I looked and saw nothing immediately wrong with the raw monster footage skipped. The more I look at all the clues, do research, and think of the rather inglorious last episode; the more the picture becomes clear: Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad was a show a made by DIC Entertainment as cheaply as possible to compete with Saban's way more successful Power Rangers franchise. It really is a classic example of an imitation product. From what I understand, the actors were more than willing to keep going, but the show was done. The makers of it knew the show had run its course, they got as much success out of it as they could have possibly gotten, and they didn't care enough to give this show a proper finale. Paying Tsuburaya for additional material was never going to happen since that defeats the purpose of being as cheap as possible. I imagine the biggest expense they were willing to splurge on was hiring Matthew Lawrence to play their lead character Sam Collins/Servo.
[ 5 / 5 ] You know, one of the biggest discoveries I could have found was that a bunch of vocal insert music was made for the show. There was a lot of original rock songs that played during the monster fights, and yet the show never released an official soundtrack containing said music. If we're lucky, the recordings exist somewhere in the vaults of DIC or the artists that recorded them. I would call that a testament to how the producers just wanted a quick cash grab, might even point to how some of the episodes feel out of order, but the real testament is how unavailable this show is. It's not available for legal streaming ANYWHERE! If you want, Shout Factory has released all the episodes on DVD boxset, and even that feels long since forgotten by now. The final nail in the coffin, of course, is the fact that the Gridman anime now has way more fame and success than the western adaption did. They tried, but I am sad and dissatisfied to say that this show did not live up to it's potential. The entire behind-the-scenes story almost feels like self-sabotage. Watch Gridman instead. It's better and easier to finish. If you have to see this, watch the episodes that were released on 3 VHS tapes. How ironic that those few episodes ended up being a sort-of Best Collection of SSSS episodes. Maybe one day I'll write a pitch piece about how SSSS should have ended, or how a sequel should have been made. ...What would they have named Grid Knight in this show?
MLP TYT 18: A Magical Pony's Table Scraps.
Poor Maretime Bay, just can't seem to catch a break. Always something trying to destroy it! You'd think Sunny would have learned not to risk the town after the last episode... Anyway, this episode feels like a random collection of ideas left over from FiM. We have the rebirth of the Equestria Games, though this time in a different scale of sorts. Honestly, the sports competition bares a more striking resemblance to the Iron Pony Competition and the Running of the Leaves. Even Sunny's reorganizing of the teams reminds me a little bit of Twilight's journey in Winter Wrap Up. However, the ending was a little predictable and kind of weak. She all ready made sure the teams had a balanced mix of all three races, you didn't have to end it on a tie where everyone wins. Just saying. Need I mention the repeat of the Unity Crystal's power waning? Over all, not a bad episode, it just ended a dull note. But hey, it's good to see Alphabittle again at least!
DonBrothers 19: Oh My Ghost!
Wasn't expecting a filler story to give me the feels, but here we are. And I hope Oni Sister grows as a person because of this. And to think they almost revealed to the other Don Brothers who Inu Brother is! STOP TEASING US, ALL READY! Surprisingly, there are no new gears in this episode. Not sure what it would have been based on since they all ready have gears based on all the vehicle Sentai and then some. Seems a little odd to not do a story-focused episode since we were introduced to Don Murasame in the last episode. There's still plenty of story to explore. Speaking of the shark, it's interesting how a character with a Japanese name and design is using a lot of English, including the word “Mother”.
ReVice 43: ReCountdown!
We're marching closer and closer to the finale. I didn't expect much from him, but Hikaru/OverDemons REALLY stepped up to the game! There's lots of drama happening right now between lots of characters, and Akaishi has made his final stand. I guess all monsters here get a red upgrade for their final moments, or should I say when they are at the height of their demonic powers. Still, the biggest thing that stole the show was Daiji/Holy Live, for better and for worse. I really want to know how this will all play out.
That's all for now, my crowd.
Take care, and celebrate while you can.
Have I mentioned that I recently discovered Napalm Records? I like the artists they have and the music I am hearing. Hope they continue to bring more awesome stuff like this. Here's a hard rock/heavy metal song called "Fly Away" by GLORYHAMMER. There is one particular line in this song that even the bronies might like.

Hi there, my crowd. How goes it?
My never ending quest for hugs continues...
Recently, I was given an update. It's not just one, BOTH of my uncles have COVID now.
They caught it at about the same time, so they should be feeling better at the same time too? From what I know, it's a new strain, but it's not as bad as the other strains of COVID. This new one just makes you feel sick for a while. No one is going to the emergency room over it, and no one is dying over it. So even if you catch it, no big deal. Just take it easy and quarantine for a while. And that's exactly what my uncles are doing. Honestly, I think the world would have been much happier if this was the only version of COVID that ever existed.
I visited my grandfather at the nursing home. He looks sickly, but he says he's all right. His neighbor is rude, though.
Thankfully, I do have some good news.
After installing a Disk Cleaner program, I found more space on my computer. It's not a ton, but it's enough to put me at ease. It'll do until I can afford a better option. The only downside is that using it will log me out of everything on Chrome and forget some of my preferred settings. Hopefully I don't have to run the Disc Cleaner too often. Also, I got another Pepsi Nitro today. It's all I could afford. Still can't find the Vanilla version; might be too late by now. But hopefully, I'll find it somewhere.

How goes it, my crowd?
This has not been a good week for me.
I recently lost all my Pokemon Omega Ruby gameplay data. Hours upon days of playing; wasted. I even played Alpha Sapphire so that I could completely collect everything between the two games. All of it gone! Basically, here's what happened... I was running the game on an emulator. I was afraid that the game was saving some temporary data on my main drive (C) instead of my storage drive (F), and it was. So I changed the settings and moved the data, but the emulator didn't like that. It freaked out. So I tried to save the data as best I could, but I had to hard delete everything anyways. Why? Because...
My computer has me concerned. It's been telling me that I am running out of space on my C drive. In total, my C drive has over 100 GB of space (my F drive has about a terabyte of space). Lately, it's been floating. Sometimes it'll tell me I have over 1 GB of free space left. Other times, it will tell me I have less. And I have no idea what to do to fix this. Today, I uninstalled a bunch of stuff, but it hardly made a difference. I've been really good about installing most of my programs onto the F drive, but I feel like something is feeding files into my C drive and taking up space. Maybe temporary files or something? Should I look into some Disk Cleaning software? I have no idea.
I'm concerned because I don't know what to do or where to turn. If money wasn't a problem right now, I could just take it to a professional and have them fix it.
And if things weren't bad enough for myself, my family is having hard times too. I all ready mentioned my grandfather being admitted to a nursing home, but now my uncle has come down with COVID. ...Again. I am really, REALLY hoping he recovers. I've heard scary stories about how people don't recover if they catch it a 2nd time.
This is turning out to be the worst week ever.
Take care, my crowd.

Don't mess with this alicorn.

Hi there, my crowd. Feeling well?
Well, it is with relief yet with sadness that I report, that my grandfather in law is being admitted to a elderly home, or perhaps more of a nursing home considering his failing health? It's a relief because his time on this earth is still limited and growing shorter every day. He can't eat without medical assistance, can't work, can't go to church, can't even get up and walk without assistance. Talk was stirring, and thankfully he is still alive right now. However, it's still sad that it has come to this. Hopefully it's for the best.
I recently got groceries and something kind of awesome happened!
I'm use to them making a mistake and not giving me everything I ordered. This time, it's the opposite. I got everything, and a bunch of bonus fruit I never ordered. Awesome! However, it felt dishonest to just take it. So I contacted the grocery store the next day and told them what happened. They apologized for the mix up and told me not to worry about it. If the original customer that ordered the fruit asks about it, they'll give them the fruit they ordered free of charge. As for what I was given? I was told to keep it! What an awesome day.
I'm not super religious. I'm agnostic. However, money was tight this time around, and I couldn't get all the things I wanted to get. If I was religious, I'd almost swear this was an act of God, trying to tell me that everything will be okay. (Not trying to make a discussion about that; just thinking out loud.)
Take care, my crowd.

Hello there, my crowd! Welcome to my Weekly Musings: Orange Edition.

I use to-- Use to-- Use to-- Use to-- Now I'm over that.
Hi there, my crowd. Let's talk about things.
I guess I should call the 4th of July the biggest thing this week? I mean, it really wasn't that big a deal for me. I all ready celebrated a day early. Plus, I guess I should mention that there was tragedy that day...
I won't go into details. If you know, you know. I feel bad for those involved, but I am glad that neither my family nor I live anywhere near that. Just more proof that nothing is sacred anymore. Not churches, not schools, and not peaceful holiday gatherings. Still, getting back on subject, I managed to have fun! I had friends to hang out with, a day off, and all the chili dogs I could eat.
Speaking of sad news, I guess I should mention what happened in Japan. With my username of choice, it'd be strange of me not to bring it up. I feel bad for the Prime Minister and his family. I am sure there are many ways to spend this. Just keep in mind that the situation is handled. The shooter turned himself in; so it's over. Japan still has better gun control laws than America and perhaps other countries ever will. This is the first major account of gun violence in a long time that the international press has known of. If you wish you say anything further about the situation, please just be supportive and understanding. No need to make this any more political than it is.
To be honest, the best day came AFTER the 4th of July! I learned that Shout Factory has not given up on giving us Tokusatsu fans physical copies of our favorite media. Kamen Rider Kuuga is getting a Bluray release with the individual sub tracks that it so rightfully deserves! (If you saw Kuuga or did the research, you understand.) But the biggest miracle of all, with the help of Hasbro's international subsidiary eOne Entertainment, we are finally getting more SUPER SENTAI DVD boxsets!!
Starting with Fiveman, a pre-Zyu series (pre-Mighty Morphin), which to me is the right direction to go in. If there's still some unsettled legal issues from either Toei, Saban, or Hasbro; then there's plenty of fans that would love to see that backlog of Sentai that started it all. I also hope the quality of subtitles improves, because Kamen Rider has really raised the bar.
My uncle did it again. He bought a DJ mixer/music controller device. Apparently he didn't learn his lesson. This time, he bought an Akai Professional/Ableton APC40 MK.II. I've never once had or experienced a device like this, let alone the software. From what little I've learned on my own, most people start out with a more simple device. I'm a beginner going in with a slightly more advanced device. I hope I can do SOMETHING with it. My uncle has decided to give me a week to try and master it. I hope I can. If I can, then I might start making music with it! If not, I'll give it back to my uncle and let him get his money back.
Part of me thinks I should just give it back to him. He spent over a hundred dollars on it. Devices like this you don't just gift to someone, not unless you're extremely well off.
Random updates! I tried Sonic's Sour Patch Slush Float. Don't know what to think about the random vanilla ice cream in the middle of it. Still, it was good, and a little unexpected! Part of me would have liked bigger sour candies in it instead of ground up candy bits (since they all sank to the bottom); however, the sour coating mixed in with the slush. I think it was made with a cherry slush, but it became sour cherry instead! That was awesome! Makes me want to try it with other flavors instead. I also saw the trailer for the Rise of the TMNT movie! Excited for that, but also hoping this new male Casey Jones is related to the first female one. Really don't want him to be a retcon/replacement for her.
NO SUPERHUMAN SAMURAI SYBER-SQUAD THIS WEEK!
Also, NO MOVIE THIS WEEK EITHER! I know, I said I would, but learning how to use this music controller and its matching software comes first. But don't worry, I got started on SSSS, and this will be the last few episodes before I give my over-all review.
DonBrothers 18: Selfless VS Selfish!
Some might be annoyed by the lack of Ranger action here, but I love these character pieces. We hardly ever got anything like this in Zenkaiger. Some might hate the anticlimactic ending of how they couldn't bring themselves to strike Taro while his guard was down, but I think that misses the point of the scene. I think it shows that these heroes would rather rise up and surpass him the honest way instead of resorting to lies and cheap tricks. It was so heart-felt that I almost forgot that this was the premiere of Don Murasame! Now I just want to know if this is a male or female character. With such a soft voice, it could go in either direction.
ReVice 42: Dancing with Vail.
Many would argue that a good story is not just one that makes you feel; it's one that challenges you to think. We got a little of both here. Seems George's father was never going to transform. Instead, he helped Genta reunite with his demon and entrap Vail. All of which allowed Genta to make peace with his demon and his past. I don't think anyone believed this moment would happen, yet at the same time, I think we all knew a final confrontation was inevitable. The interesting thing is that Genta also did this to set an example for Daiji/Live. Apparently Daiji hated the alignment he chose, but he was stuck with it because he couldn't forgive himself, but his father showed him how to forgive yourself. Did this really work? Guess we'll see next time. It's not the ending to the evil Daiji arc that I was expecting, but it challenges me to stop and think about it, and I like that.
MLP TYT 17: I'll Be There For You~!
Upon second watching, I have to say this is still not the worst episode, but I can kind of understand if some don't like it. It doesn't really go anywhere in particular. It's a standard switch-place-for-a-day episode. The Mane 5 take on the Queen's responsibilities, and the Queen gets to relax a bit. I was afraid she would try and use this moment to encourage her daughter Zipp to take the throne after all. You know, show her that she can handle it after all, then coax her into it. Thankfully, that did not happen! Instead, the Mane 5 gained a new appreciation and respect for all she does, and it was nice. ... Also, did anyone else notice the sudden use of classical, public domain music? That doesn't bode well...
That's all for now, my crowd.
Take care, and protect your eyes.

Here I come, weekend!
How goes it, my crowd?
My uncle decided to let me borrow his newest device, the Ableton / Akai Professional APC40 mkII. I've seen music controllers in action before, but I've never had one nor do I know where to begin. Hopefully I can make this work with Windows. He has given me a week to mess with it and see if I can master it; if I can't do anything with it, then my uncle will get his money back on it. Hopefully that won't eat up too much of my time.
Hope everyone is staying out of the heat~ Also, who knows how to do the shuffle?
Take care, my crowd.
