The point is, so many people make this out to be something that is decided by fate. That isn't true in the slightest. There's no such thing as any predetermined outcome... and if what you're doing now isn't working, there's nothing stopping you from trying another approach. Believe me, I completely understand how much it sucks to be alone, but that doesn't mean the situation is any bit hopeless.
