Exactly. Granted, they try to give some justification about how Rarity was the easiest of the elements to corrupt, but not only does it still seem underwhelming, that also means the princess of the night turning into Nightmare Moon was purely a coincidence.

At least, if that's not what they're flat out saying, it seems pretty heavily implied, with Nightmare Rarity going on about everything she remembers from being Nightmare Moon and saying that Rarity is "gone."

Seems like the latter to me.

I think you have it backwards; it's usually easier to understand a language than it is to speak it

Actually, I did take a few years of French class up through college, but I wouldn't say I ever quite made it up to speaking it "fluently" (no way I was fast enough to have a casual conversation with someone from France) and its been a couple years now.
