  1. Here's an interesting write-up of an study on the subject that found that "the differences we find between men's and women's ability to be funny are so small that they can't account for the strength of the belief in the stereotype." It did found some interesting things though, like how captions deemed funny were more often misattributed to men whilst those deemed unfunny were more often misattributed to women.

Also, said study also found that men rated other men's comedy higher than women did so it certainly doesn't support the idea that men evolved to be funny to attract women.

Of course, the study in question aren't perfect but at least it's better than just looking at what actors/comedians/etc you personally like.

  2. "And I just rolled my eyes because I couldn't believe that these kids that claim to be die hard anime fans had NEVER heard of Ghost in the Shell"

is it just me or is it starting to get a bit gatekeep-y in here? The notion that you can't be "a diehard fan" without knowing about [insert popular thing here] needs to die off.

"But instead of being valid criticisms, they were stupid things like: "Why are the graphics so bad?" and "Why is the way the characters look so weird?" I just groaned in annoyance, because these kids were too dumb to know that this anime was nearly 20 years old, so it's obviously going to look kinda dated compared to now."

I really don't like this argument. I mean, it still looks bad at the end of the day, regardless of it's justifiable or not.

Teenagers these days are only interested in the new popular anime, nothing old that helped make the genre popular in the US like Ghost in the Shell and Akira.

Yes, heaven forbid people develop their own taste.

Kids today are afraid to spread their horizons in anime and only watch what is popular at the time.

The same thing applied to the vast majority of the previous generation of anime fans.

Ask them about any movie Miyazaki has done and they don't know who that is. It's very sad.

I'm gonna assume that, based on this line, you haven't actually talked to any teenage anime fan.

This issue is that if you don't have a any kind of story or lore for the characters at all, then having a character be confirmed gay in some battle royale game accomplishes nothing

    1) One could argue that by mentioning one of the characters having been in a gay relationship just as causally as if it been a straight one, it serves to normalise LGBT relationships.

    2) Why does it have to accomplish something? Would you have the same critique had said characters bio mentioned that he had a girlfriend?

    7 hours ago, Kyoshi said:

It doesn't add anything to the game, certainly not to the gameplay itself.

Again, would you have said the same thing if said character was straight?

Then all of a sudden comes Apex Legends and out of nowhere it too has TWO gay characters.

Small nitpick, but it doesn't have two gay characters. It has one.

Yes, another character is non-binary but that isn't really the same thing.

So you don't see the issue with the concept that you aren't able to think what you want?

But is that really the case here? It's just teaching kids to be nice towards each other.

4 hours ago, Santa Barik said:

    That's because it is wrong.

So? It's still forcing kids to "think a certain way".

    Why do you ask? ;)

Because it baffles me. I seriously don't get what's so wrong with having the common decency to refer to people the way they want to be referred to as.

    1 hour ago, JonasDarkmane said:

The reason is because I don't see them as the sex they want to be referred to. It is essentially trying to reset everything I have been brought up with, everything society has taught, just because of the inconveniance of a few (over words no less) :)

How does referring a small group of people as the opposite sex try "reset everything you've been brought up with"?

  6. 5 hours ago, JonasDarkmane said:

While I am fine with you doing whatever you want with your speech, I am not going to be referring to a man as a woman or a woman as a man.

If uoi don't mind, may I ask why? I mean, if you knew that somebody identified as the opposite gender it'd be sort of rude to refer to them as their biological sex.

  7. "Well, it's not to cover up all of the females, as Sarkeesian would like.  It's....*drumroll*....yup, you guess it!  Let's show some skin on the males!  Offer equally revealing, equally sexualized male variants. "

Honestly, I disagree with this a bit. Maybe it's because I'm not a very big fan of overly sexualized armors to begin with, but I'd prefer it if more games would at least try to give their female practical armor.

I also don't see how the problem with overly sexualized female charaters is solved by making the male characters equally sexualized. To me it just adds to the problem.

Everyone is hypcritcal about it. They say it's special and bull shit like that, but they justify having sex whenever they want to.

I still don't see how it's hypocritical. Most people think sex is special and therefore won't sleep with every single person.

    13 minutes ago, BronyNumber42licious said:

I supposed women enjoy it when they have it, but they don't need it like men do. How is this even controversial?

Because men don't need sex anymore than women does.

When men and women meet somewherr, like a bar or whatever, who do you think has a harder time picking someone up, men or women?

I don't see how this is relevant at all.

Honest about what? She's clearly told you that she doesn't want to sleep with you.

If I had a lady friend who was unnatractive, I would still help her out.

Most people (both men and women) wouldn't, and that has nothing to do with whether or not they enjoy sex.

She is a hypocrite because she will do it with some guy she doesn't know nearly as well as she knows me.

I still don't see how she's a hypocrite.  I mean, maybe she's not just attracted to you.

    3 minutes ago, BronyNumber42licious said:

This proves my point that women don't really care for it.

So what you're saying is that because your friend didn't want to have sex with you somehow proves that most women don't enjoy sex? That might be the dumbest shit I've ever heard.

She is a hypocrite because she had a bf for a year. Now he's gone. So she will have sex with a guy she knew for a year, but she's known me for more than 15 years and nothing.

I still don't see how she is a hypocrite. You aren't entitled to sex with anyone just because you known them for a long period of time.

And technically I don't need my eyes, so you are right.

You need your eyes way more than you need sex, so I don't see your point.

A small sample size and experience with a female friend. She doesn't realize that men need need it. But to her it's like asking for a kidney. She's totally hypocritical.

So you're basing the assumption that women don't want to have sex on your experience with one of your female friends and a small sample size? That's a bit silly. Your sample size must also have been ridiculously tiny, since the vast majority of women I've talked to both online and in real life enjoys sex.

Furthermore, I don't see how your friend was being a hypocrite.

Also, I'd argue that men doesn’t need sex.

My research shows that is is true. The only time women have sex is to get pregnant or because they have to in order to keep a man.

    You're joking right?

My point is: You cannot be too careful. No one "looks like a 3rd wave feminist", and no one "looks like an anti-feminist". Always take life with caution.

But that's completely irrelevant to what I asked you. My question was how the fact that you are a male feminist justifies that you think that all men are disrespecting, sexist scumbags.
