yup. The Philip's CD-I actually has an.... interesting history.
You see, when Nintendo was looking to put out a console to succeed the SNES, they made a deal with Sony to make a platform that used discs instead of cartridges (because at the time, they were much more powerful than cartridges) to make 3D games. But once a loophole was discovered by Nintendo that would allow Sony to take pretty much all the net profit of the console, Nintendo broke ties with them without warning and made a new deal with Sony's rival company, Philip's. Sony of course was not happy as they had invested a lot of time and money into a nearly finished product only to be broken off last-minute and replaced wit their rival company. They came close to giving up, but instead of doing so, they decided.... screw it. They still had a gaming console the likes of which the world had never seen, and even though they thought they had no chance against the giants, Nintendo and Sega (and the new Microsoft X-Box), they entered the console wars for themselves... and while initially they were unpopular and unheard of, when they fired up their console and showed investors what it could do with 3-D gaming, they went nuts and threw a metric butt ton of money at Sony, who patented their new console.... the Play Station...
Meanwhile, Philips developed their console, the Philip's CD-I.... which went over about as well as New Coke...
Nintendo, burned by their decisions pretty much held a vendetta against disc-based gaming because of the poor performance of the CD-I and made their next replacement console (the n64) cartridge based... or perhaps it was because they still lacked disk drive technology at the time and needed a third party to handle it......And then Playstation on that generation of the console wars, killing off Sega as a console develouper, who was already struggling to compete against Nintendo and now could no longer afford to be in the races next to this new juggernaut console that even beat out Nintendo...
(TL;DR: Playstation is the equivelant of Androids 17 and 18 while the Philip's CD-I and Dreamcast were Dr. Gero and his other Android companion that got slaughtered by the Nintendo's creation in a very ironic lesson in hubris.)
... If I could animate, I'd make a series like Hetalia, but only depicting the console wars and history of home video-gaming...
