I think that Princess Celestia is Twilight's DAUGHTER. why i say this is because at the end of season 3 when Twilight becomes an alicorn princess, Celestia said "She's always been a Princess". And yet Twilight came from an ordinary background who was interested in magic. So my idea/ opinion is this Celesstia and Luna go back in time from the future to the time Equestria is in dark times where villans are ruling the land and that future Twilight died and told Celestia and Luna...

@ooBrony, it was an "eternal state of unrest and unhappiness" but he ruled for a finite period of time since Celestia and Luna took up the throne as youths and regained it by overthrowing Discord. @Bruticus, then that would be an awesome and really huge plot twist. =) I could see the connection with "Twilight" being the period between night and day represented by the Alicorn Princesses and with how all their cutie marks are on the Tree of Harmony, but still it's a bit far-...
