I have to admit! prior to meeting a ton of people in this fandom that enjoy it, I was really creeped out by metal heads. To me, about 1993 it became all about screaming and anger. I love the '80s pop-metal of groups like Def Leppard, Quiet Riot, Twisted Sister or Motley Crüe, but I just can't get behind anything after about 1989.
I also used to detest rap, but then I stopped listening to lyrics and started to just enjoy the rhythm, and I'll admit that I now see the appeal. I wished they'd stop promoting violence and drunkenness, though.
Modern country I still can't get, on the whole, I think mainly because I fought hard not to become what my environment was as a kid, and my mother is a country fanatic. Also, I wanted to stand out in a population who thought the trinity consisted of Chevy Trucks, Jesus, and George Strait, in that order. But I can appreciate a lot of the stuff that's 10+ years old! and I have to admit that Florida Georgia Line's stuff is generally catchy.
The final genre I'm going to touch on is EDM. I had never even heard of this stuff prior to joining the fandom at large, and while I'm not very deep into it, I can definitely see the appeal of it. I have to admit, I have become very partial to Skrillex's Cinema and Bangarang since being introduced to the genre.
