Besides MLP, my life is devoted to the arts in all their myriad forms: theatre, music, literature, dance, visual art, film, television, video games, and so on and so on into eternity. I find it hard to draw particular distinctions about what I like and what I don't like, but I can probably say that theatre is the field to which I have academically consecrated myself and I have a particular devotion to the work of the Romantics, the Symbolists, and the German Expressionists, as well as the poets of the Japanese Noh theatre.

I adore the ragtime, jazz, and Tin Pan Alley tunes of the period from about the 1900s to the 1930s. Some of my favorite musicians of that period are probably Eddie Cantor (of course!), Red McKenzie, Frank Teschemacher, Cliff Edwards, Freddie Keppard, King Oliver, Johnny Dodds, Ferdinand Morton, Tom Stacks, and Harry Reser. I should probably stop there!

I am also something of an occultist, in the tradition inaugurated by "Chaos Magic." I believe that what is known as "magic" is not "spells" or impossible effects but is in fact a deliberate use of the technology of the imagination to transform our perception of and interaction with the world; I reject as a falsehood the strict separation of the categories of "reality" and "fantasy" and seek to infuse both with each other. Breaking down the boundaries between the material world and the world of MLP has, in fact, been one of the constant subjects of my magical research...

I also enjoy the occasional game of chess, though I'm very terrible at it. This is mostly due to my relatively poor spatial reasoning, but also because my play is stuck in the 19th century; I simply can't let go of the beauty of the kind of chess Paul Morphy and Adolph Anderssen played.

1. Wow, your grandfather was with a dance band back in the day? I guess that explains how the musical talent got passed forward. I'm definitely going to try and seek out that recording now! I'm glad to hear you found my silly little music interesting; your compliment is very kind. I hope the bawdiness wasn't too offputting in "When I'm Making Weather." I love making jokes like that, regardless of the subject, and i find them even funnier when they're in song form, so a lot of the pony songs I write (or rewrite, as it were) end up that way. I figure I might post about those videos here when I have a few more proper posts under my belt. Don't want to rush things... I'll be setting aside some time to listen to the other pony music you have on your channel, ragtime or not. I listened to an orchestral piece you did and found it quite stirring! Update: I just found and listened to Roane's Pennsylvanians doing "Chinatown, My Chinatown," and would you believe what a small world it is? I had actually heard their version on SoundCloud only a few days ago, where somebody had posted it without properly crediting the band! I actually had been listening to your grandfather without even knowing it! But it's a really great take on the song. The vocal is super-sentimental, which I think Jerome and Schwartz would have appreciated, but boy is that trumpet solo hot! And I love how the clarinet soloist quotes Cole Porter's "Let's Misbehave" when he comes in for his say. Do you know if your grandfather was a soloist with the group? Or was he a sideman?
2. Oh, there are just so, so many. Two of the most prominent though, are probably these: When I first heard this song, there was no question about it; it was about Applejack. This is kind of her unofficial theme song in my head. Sure, maybe it's not the most complimentary song, but I still feel like it suits Rarity to a T. "You're trying to make your mark in society You're using all the tricks that you used on me You're reading all them high fashion magazines The clothes you're wearing, girl, they're causing public scenes!"
3. Sweet Celestia, where has your music been all my life?!?! This is the first time I've actually found ragtime/jazz pony music besides my own! Thank you, thank you, thank you for making this!
4. I've never accidentally believed MLP was real... I've always been very deliberate in believing it was real! I'm an occultist of the "Chaos Magic" persuasion (more info for those who don't know about that here), and I therefore affirm that belief is a tool for achieving effects. With apologies to any Christian bronies (and allow me to state that I respect the Christian faith and indeed find much value in the Catholicism I was raised in), it is my contention that if one can speak of "a personal relationship with Jesus Christ," it's no less possible to speak of "a personal relationship with Rainbow Dash." I imagine ponies. I interact with them and they interact with me, sometimes through the same imagination by which writers create their characters (how many times have we read about a novelist finding that his or her characters start taking on "a life of their own?"), sometimes through symbolic occurrences in my environment. If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it's a duck. As far as my reality is concerned, if it looks like a pony, walks like a pony, and talks like a pony, it's definitely a real MLP:FiM pony. Sure, it can be really hard to sustain this kind of imagination, especially if you try to keep it up it constantly. But I still think, if one accepts my premises, that this proof of the existence of ponies is a cause for rejoicing!
5. Amazing! Now THAT is magic! Thank you kindly for your aid, Senpai~. I can't believe you noticed little ol' me...
6. I've thought about this topic a lot. Well...perhaps it would be more accurate to say that I dreaded this topic a lot. It's like thinking about your best friend dying or something. But in the end, I don't think the show is the be-all and end-all of what My Little Pony is. It's true we all love it, that it's what laid the foundation for our humble community. But look at how we've taken this kernel of creativity and run with it! It's my opinion that, at least for bronies, MLP belongs as much to the fans as it does to its original creators. As long as the love of ponies continues to live in our hearts, as long as there are wonderful and kind and creative people who can imagine new stories and pictures and music, then I don't think the show will ever truly end. It may no longer be something professional, but the fandom and its universe will continue to inspire and delight. On a personal level, I spend much of my imaginative time essentially living in Ponyville. So, even if I'll be sad when the show says its final goodbye, I know that I'll never have to say goodbye to my very best pony friends!
7. Wow... This really IS the friendliest forum on the internet! And in the words of my prototype from 1941, I'm happy about the whole thing! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ts3XN_Kq9kA (0:43-1:17) On another note, would anypony perhaps be able to tell me how to pull off that fancy embedding trick on YouTube videos? I figure it would be more convenient for everypony involved...
8. I didn't expect to be so enchanted with this! It's like Cecil Taylor was tempered with the impressionist sensibilities of Bix Beiderbecke's piano compositions. It's truly stirring to the soul, and a fine complement to the message of friendship.
9. It's quite heartening to see so many people placing such stock in the power, the intensity, and even the beauty of their dreams; Andre Breton would be proud! It is almost as if our hearts know that somewhere beyond the veil of our day-to-day senses is the world of ponies we yearn to be a part of... I, for one, have resolved to pit my imagination and my dreams against the tyranny of reality until I can fully break down the wall that separates our worlds and live my life in Equestria...or at the very least parallel to it. Faustian hubris? Perhaps, but it is only by daring greatly that great deeds are achieved! (Oh, and that's Dr. Faust, not Lauren Faust!)
10. I am a somewhat late arrival to the fandom, and as it stands, I've only finished with season three. I apologize in advance for my ignorance and beg your indulgence if, for a little while, I am somewhat incapable of understanding some of the references on this forum. For about two years, I've felt a little too shy to "join the herd," as it were, but I feel like I'm fairly ready to enjoy the online company of other bronies now. It can be hard when you love MLP a lot but have no brony friends to share it with... I am a fanfiction author, though my major work, Dynasty Ponies (a crossover between MLP and Koei's Dynasty Warriors) is on hiatus as I have been unable to write a new chapter that meets even my lowest standards. I also create pony music as Eddie Canter & His Applebuckers, a jug band configuration with banjo, washboard, and kazoo/funnel trumpet that reflects my love of both MLP and the ragtime, jazz, and Tin Pan Alley tunes of the 1900s to about the 1930s. Eddie Canter & His Applebuckers play ponified versions of songs from that time period as well as originals in that style. I must admit, though, like my namesake entertainer, I have a very bawdy sense of humor that comes through in a lot of the numbers we do... I don't tend to be a very active poster, but you may rest assured that I will continue to keep abreast of what is going on in these forums. Oh yeah, and overall best pony is Fancy Pants, hooves down.
