the best way to make a story good is to add alot of depth to the characters. if you play your card right, love could really add that element of depth.

you could interweave love into the reason why he is doing this in the first place. maybe he had his heart hardened by a recent divorce + other things to make him try to overtake the mlp universe. the more background you put into the main character the more people will be able to feel what he is feeling, more atmosphere. this will provide a good sturdy base for a story like this.
