      In the west, Christmas is a time for being together with loved ones, and New Years is a time of celebration. While in Japan, it's almost the reverse; Christmas is a romanticized holiday (unless you're single) and New Years is a time for being together with loved ones. But the idea of giving gifts on Christmas time is still a universal idea in both cultures.
