May I suggest that you work on doing something without copying a base? I find that it really helps improve personal style over time when you challenge yourself to venture away from your typical ways~

I say the sooner, the better. And keep in mind that at first it will almost always look like trash, but keeping at it, trying new things, and always thinking of what will look good will be a great help in the long run!
