Very true, very true indeed. I'm thinking of making the character the guardian of an area of knowledge and having word based magic since Sphinx's are known for their riddles. It would also give them a wonderful weakness since the words of magic have to be spoken, also making the poison from the tail less potent than an actual Manticore due to the fact they are a hybrid.
