That's How I mastered photoshop :] I just messed around, a lot. I didn't start making anything worth anything till two or three years later. I also took the same attitude to learn web design. I started in the 7th grade just messing around with the free stuff and just curiously messing around. Now I've been doing web design professionally since my Junior year in high school. Just make noise, ignore the mountain that is the software and all it's plugins and just mess with stuff....

i suppose that's true. i like having some kind of direction on what i do though so i don't feel like a hopeless sheep wandering around without its shepherd guiding the way.

Then you could perhaps go around on youtube/sound cloud and find people who make music you like and see if they will mentor you. Worst that could possibly happen is say no.
