  1. the easiest thing is to have a local comic shop. they can.. * have subscriptions for you, and pick up all the comics you want as they come out * notify you when comics have arrived for you * give you hot news.... speaking of hot news, my comic shop told me that IDW has become so unreliable, that Hasbro has elected to not renew their contract with IDW, so in a few months, MLP and IDW will be separate forever. it's likely that IDW will rush to print as many MLP comics as possible before the contract expires, and that another company will snap up MLP as soon as the license is available, so it probably won't be too big a disruption. for better or for worse, hasbro has decided not to offer one company ALL their properties. so they don't have to find one company wiling to print everything. we just need one company to make an offer on MLP, and the series will continue. support your local businesses! especially when they are comic shops!
  2. the comics and novels have always felt like "B" canon to me. official, but only so far as it doesn't contradict the show, and it isn't fair to judge show characters based on what they learned or experienced in the comics. the comics and novels benefited from freedom to to less oversight, but less oversight also meant they didn't necessarily conform to the overall vision. this opinion of the comics isn't changed by some of the comics being called "season 10". but if you disagree, that's fine. i know i don't have much of a leg to stand on in support of my theory. -- " I like the idea of the comic doing its own thing and ... having its own identity. " yeah, for sure. that's made them really great.
  3. You guys are being silly. this isn't "so soon". this is massively extended. they would have been justified in ending it with the show, but instead, the main series is going 14+ months after the end of the show, and they just announced issues of a gen1/gen4 crossover, extending the comics another 5 months. the way the timing works out, it seems we will get the first gen 5 content (the movie) months before the last gen 4 comic. why are you so angsty about things that are already such gifts? that sounds exhausting. do you remember at the start of season 3, we knew that that season only had 13 episodes, and everyone was afraid it was the last season? we are incredibly fortunate the show and comic have gone on this long.
  4. tony fleecs was talking about pushing to get 100 issues, back when there were still only about 84 out. i'm thrilled both that they pushed to 100, and past it as well. this doesn't look particularly good to me, nor does it especially appeal to me, but i bet they do something fun with it. hopefully gen 5 gets comics too.
  5. they are all one-shots, so they could stop anywhere. i don't find it to be particularly odd. when season 9 was announced as the last season, Tony Fleecs and other artists started pushing for an extension of the comic to 100 issues, which at the time was about an entire year past the end of the show. that would be a satisfying number to end on... but we know it's going to go until at least #101. having a weird number might feel odd, but isn't it better that the number of issues be odd than stories feel rushed or half-assed? and it isn't "Free" to go up to 50 in a series. there's opportunity cost. and the opportunity cost for 12 more issues is AN ENTIRE YEAR that all other side-series comics are pushed back. and some of those side projects would then come out at weird times. like, knightmare nights is better if it's closer to the MLP movie since it ahs tempest... do you remember that they actually designed the release of "legends of equestria" comics such that it was coming out concurrently with episodes related to these characters? that must have been a feat to pull off, but delay two months and they miss the optimal window. if they can do cute things with the numbering, great! but it should be the first thing to sacrifice if there are more pressing needs
  6. yeah, there were some absolutely inspired matchups. but i'd argue that it shows more creativity to create more hooks than to use the same hook every time for years at a time. in theory at least. and a hook that is "two characters together" is one that fits within other hooks. for instance, the big mac/zecora arc in the main-line series. i do think it's important to get small, and not always be a big epic, and it is a bit disappointing that most of the side arcs have been epic recently, at the same time that the main-line is trending toward epic to match the hook of season 10. but i don't think this is an issue that came about because of the end of FF. they could have worked to keep a steady diet of small cast comics within the framework they create. for instance, the scootaloo plus aunts issue in the middle of season 10 that had a FF feel. we need more of that inserted inbetween the longer stories they want to tell.
  7. dang, i really loved discord/CMC and spike/celestia. but as much as i loved the series, variety is good too. i don't want forever friends forever if it means we wouldn't have got "FIENDship is magic" or "legends of magic" or "nightmare knights" or "feats of friendship".... and even the transforms crossovers, which are just brilliant, are part of this side slot. sure, if we can have our cake and eat it to... maintaining FF as a standalone series and still get all the cool side content... then i'm in. or even, let's do a new side series, FF part 2...? afterall, there are LOTS of new characters to explore since it ended - i think legends of magic is very different than FF. the first is only one-shots, and the later is a 12-part monster, the longest series in the entire run of comics. it's very good, but in a different way. i'd rather have both than a FF that is 12 issues longer. and even if i didn't think "legends" was worth it, the sum total of all the other cool things we got, was worth it in my opinion. - i think my biggest regret is that they were absolutely the best thing to get a VA to sign. you had issues that were dedicated to just two characters, so they were my go-to when i knew i was going to see someone at a convention.
  8. oh i've been loving them! as wonderful as one-shots are, if we get 6-parters of this quality, i'm all for it! The background on stygian and the team has been lovely. Meadowbrook has been especially enjoyable to read about, and her part with the dragons was the highlight of the series to me so far.
  9. the reason to integrate is the same reason it is risky to have homogeneous ethnic groups on earth. fear/ignorance of the other leads to prejudice, while people that live in close proximity have the chance to get to know people from other cultures. It obviously makes no sense to uproot and move all the dragons to canterlot in one afternoon, but closer contact allows for friendships and understanding. it is obviously more complex than that in real life, and needs to be done carefully, but it is ideal that individuals from lots of different cultures can celebrate those together. --- I thought the comic was a bit disappointing, but that was because of the lack of focus. i loved the cultural aspects of it.
  10. well, i started at the beginning of the 2nd season, so it's just been 6 years for me. but my reasons have evolved. at first, it was becuase the show was so refreshing in it's purpose and themes. But now it's because of the quality community that I enjoy thanks to the show, most especially the brony club that I started over a year ago.
  11. ah, how refreshing! there seem to be so many episodes where the ponies do something really boneheaded and reckless, but things work out anyways, and then they ignore the leadup to the resolution... but in this episode, they didn't let it go! thorax confronted them afterwards! love it!
  12. well, it looks stunning, well done.
  13. the comics have many virtues that make them, on average, more enjoyable to me than the show. they are written for a slightly older audience for one thing. For instance, the young twilight/baby spike issue, where they make an analog for a young mother trying to get schooling while taking care of a baby, is not something we'd ever see in the show. That issue is one one of my favorite canon stories. in a similar vein, the writers are more willing to make adult references to shows, movies and books that are just too old for 10 year olds to get. for another thing, comics are FAR better than episodes for showing what individuals are THINKING. For instance, there is a killer 2-parter where we got TONS of thought bubbles from big mac, and it very much adds to his character. We also get a chance to read maud pie's diary, and that was also fascinating. the comics are also great at showing relationships that would be tough to show in the show. For instance, those in the past, like starswirl and celestia, or the sombra and the pony friend that he used to know. I'd say go for it. If you tell me one of your favorite ponies, I can recommend some good comics for you featuring them.
  14. an alright episode... until twilight FINALLY showed off her earth pony powers by making crops grow faster! woooooo! I've been waiting so long!
  15. so, did you actively braid that piece of tail, or did you sculpt the braid into the tail?
  16. wow. that just takes it to a whole nother level. did you learn anything at your new job that got you there?
  17. so, we've seen maud happy before...but have we ever seen her smile before? the happy things she's said and done you've had to GET. but we got an actual, if very tiny, smile from her this episode. they've done such a great job with her character that this was pretty spectacular to me.
  18. starlight was a treat she really let her hair down, and seemed relaxed for like the first time ever. also, when she was talking to pinkie pie in bed, it was fantastic to see her town between telling the truth, and not hurting her friend's feelings. It was very relatable for her to feel bad afterwards, and pulling the covers over her head in shame was fantastic! "friendship lesson learned" was a cute way to show it! also, they've fleshed her out a bit mroe in other ways! The whole kite thing totally fits her! I like that she has a fun looking hobby to nerd out over.
  19. there are two types of annoying episodes: 1) annoying stuff happens 2) annoying stuff happens, and then it is addressed, and becomes a lesson. Honestly, the redemption of pinkie pie in this one makes this one a lot better. I'm glad she wasn't awful without anyone calling attention to it, and getting it through her head.
  20. methinks that the note might be a lie to get quality time with starlight. Edit: well, maybe not.
  21. when maud told us that she helped starlight enslave her village, pinkie pie muttered, and I heard "awkward as hell", instead of "offer to help"
  22. Rejoice everfree goers! https://everfreenw.com/events/ My pick for the best event is "Don't Forget the Lyrics" on saturday morning. But i might be biased since that one is mine : ) What are you guys looking forward to?
  23. yup : ) I very much prefer competent and conscientious spike to bumbling spike. Ideally Twilight would start to learn to take what he says a bit more seriously.
  24. wow, bringing a baby to a hospital full of infectious kids is really irresponsible! the nurses should not have allowed that!
  25. major props to the writer for taking some cheap shots at modern art. drives me crazy that things that take so much less skill are celebrated alongside things that take a lifetime to master.
