If you were the noble ruler of a medieval fantasy kingdom, what would your army be? Or, if you were an evil overlord of a medieval fantasy empire or horde, what would your army be?
If I were a good king, my army would consist of well trained men-at-arms, peasant conscripts recruited from the strongest men in the villages, well trained knights, skilled mages, resourceful rangers, elf, dwarf, giant, half-giant, fairy, pixie, and gnome allies, dragons, griffons, hippogriffs, pegasi, centaurs, satyrs, crafty siege engineers and cannon crews, powerful siege engines and bombards, and several bands of mercenaries from other nations.
If I were an evil overlord, my army would consist of ruthless knights, ruthless men-at-arms serving as shock troops, peasant conscripts with training and equipment ranging from poor to fairly practical serving as rank-and-file troops (the fairly-well trained conscripts) and as cannon fodder (a bit of both fairly-well trained and not-so-well-trained conscripts), fearsome and notorious warlords and their mercenary companies and barbarian hordes, payed bandits and pirates who raid enemy supply lines and trade routes for supplies, deadly assassins, goblin troops serving as rank-and-file among the human conscripts, hobgoblin shock troops, trolls, ogres, giants, half-giants, cyclopes, dark elves, evil dwarves, dark gnomes, dark fairies, dragons, griffons, hippogriffs, centaurs, satyrs, minotaurs, siege engineers and cannon crews, powerful siege engines and bombards, arcane weaponry, monsters created by my Imperial alchemists, and the armies of puppet states under my command.
