I hadn't read many fanfics either until this last year or so. Past Sins and Nyx were both made by Pen Stroke. It's one of the really early fanfics. I think it was originally made between seasons 1 and 2, so around 2011-ish. It was updated after season 2, around 2012 I think, and that's the state it stayed in.
From what I've seen not a lot of people share my opinion on this, but Past Sins is easily the best fanfic I've ever read and it's way up there in the best books I've ever read in general.

Apparently Past Sins was really popular for a while, probably still is kinda popular, I just never gave it a try until about 8 months ago. But anyway, there's a good bit of fan art of Nyx out there that fans of the story have made. Not a ton, not nearly as much as I'd like, but there's a decent amount. As for that picture up there with Nyx offering you a balloon, I drew that one myself a while back.
Oh, and a link to the fanfic. Before clicking it I should warn you, the cover picture for this story on fimfiction is very spoiler-heavy. Don't look too close if you think you might ever read it.

Objection: Clearly Luna only takes care of two celestial bodies: the moon and the crystal sphere that the stars are embedded in. @Phosphor knows all about this; it's astronomy 101.

That's an interesting feeling. I just read a fanfic that solves an issue I never knew I had because I never gave it enough thought, regarding how the season 1 premier handled Nightmare Moon. The way it was written, this particular fanfic could technically be show accurate too; everything that happened in the show still happened, and in the same way.
There's so much I could say about this fanfic that it would fill a book (or at least a few pages of one), but I'll shorten it down to simply this: "Her Soldiers, We" is a very interesting read and well worth the time it takes to read it (it's not very long).
