Since white dwarf stars are so dense but not quite massive enough to continue collapsing, they are stopped because the Pauli exclusion principle disallows things like electrons and all other fermions from simultaneously occupying the same quantum state. In other words, it’s the closest their electrons are willing to get to their protons.
