Discord probably could have gained Pinkie Pie’s cooperation without the trickery and mind control.

I just saw that season 8 song promo and I'm starting to get excited again. I should know better at this point, but they're doing something different. They're doing something different! Oh, please tell me that this means a complete overhaul. I am so, so ready for a gimmick season.

@Califorum Do you not like the mane six?
-
-
@Califorum How peculiar. They're most of the reason why I watch this show in the first place.
-
I see a lot of posts on here from people who like characters just because they demonstrate admirable behaviour, and I dunno, that's good for them, but I'm not sure that makes a character interesting on their own. I can enjoy a good inspirational story, but in a continuing series I think a balance is important.

@Lambdadelta Ehh, that’s not quite my issue with Starlight, and I overstated that issue with “Shadow Play” - I wanted more doubt, not more misdeeds. Although I don’t think she brought any personality to that episode, to be honest.
Starlight bothers me because I don’t think there’s anything to her aside from the mistakes and the redemption arc, which everything always comes back to. I worry it’s too late to give her, like, an actual personality beneath that.
-
@AlexanderThrond Ok, ok, I totally get what you say now, this is a very legitimate concern.
Starlight story usually involve her past self but they don't actually add anything new to her new self. I personally believed there are more backstory, more depth to her backstory in Cutie Remark but after 2 seasons, I started to think maybe there isn't anymore in her past story anymore, the answer is the same as the past 2 years: she become evil due a traumatic past event. They never show her past after Sunburst left, her past story always stop right after he left, nothing more, does that time between her first traumatic event and her first cult have nothing to talk about at all? Kind of the wasted potential.
Unlike Sunset, Starlight's past is her today now, her story arc will always stuck in the past, like she will spend the rest of her life regretting her past and repeating her mistake or something... which can be a bit tiring, I give you that. You know, a lot of people get tired of Fluttershy's timidness and scream at the screen "get over it" for more than 5 seasons
or people roll their eyes whenever they saw a Spike episode until season 6
, get what I mean?
It not too late to give her more depth, what I worry is they don't have that in mind at all, it could be their status quo and they wont get out of their comfort zone. Even we got more than 3+ seasons, if they don't act right now, it will never happen. Anyway, be a bit optimistic, how can you enjoy the new season if you just keep those concerns around your head?

[I had a bunch of blather here about a season 8 promo, and then I lost it in an editing mishap.]
I'm hopeful that changes to the show in season 8 will cause Starlight to demonstrate more of a unique personality, more consistency, and more well-thought out relationships with the rest of the cast, then I'm all for it. At least give me a kite episode. But if she just becomes Diet Twilight, then no, I'm not okay with that.

“Good” is not the absence of bad.

@AlexanderThrond You make a very good point there.

-
-
@Number62 Yeah, it works both ways. Being relatively problem-free doesn’t make something interesting, just as having issues doesn’t invalidate what something does well.
-
So is there any legit way to see the Equestria Girls series in Canada or nah
-
Without Spike to cook for her, it seems likely that Sci-Twi's diet is going to get dramatically worse once she moves out.
-
I kinda wanna see a pony episode with all of mane six's siblings (and also Scootaloo) together.
-
Anyone remember the stinger of “Griffon the Brush Off,” where Celestia accidentally used invisible ink? I’m not convinced anyone was pranking her. That’s her prank ink, and she accidentally left it laying around. She will get you.
-
I've mentioned this before, but one thing I like a lot about the season 5 finale is that it finally gave Twilight some sort of meaningful closure. Giving university lectures, and later having a personal apprentice of her own, is exactly where her ambitions would have led her, and exactly what best fits everything she's learned over the course of the show. I felt it logically concluded her character arc in a way which becoming a princess never did, and it's probably my favourite thing about that episode.
-
Did Fluttershy even mind contracting that tree disease, or was she just unhappy about being contagious? We know she would like to be a tree.
-
I still have my fingers crossed that we might see Sunset’s human counterpart. If she’s still evil, I think the two Sunsets meeting has a ton of potential.

Legend of Everfree is my 2nd fav. Songs are way better and more funny too.
I feel like Friendship Games was trying to really expand on these characters like oh snaps Sunset Shimmer is getting mad but still has to learn and blah blah but just drags a bit. Nothing really makes me stay glued to the screen except Rainbow Dash’s song.
I would say they tried to be ambitious but failed with making it exciting. Again I still like the movie just to a lesser extent.
-
-
@Misscellanio More power to you, I guess. I've never really gone back to the "Legend of Everfree" songs, though maybe only because I'm bored by the story they tell. Humour did absolutely nothing for me in much of that film.
@Lambdadelta I heard that too, but that sucks. It's such a waste of potential that I hope the writers change their minds.

I was thinking of making a snide remark about the Annie nominees, but then I saw “Despicable Me 3” and “The Boss Baby” on the list, and those seem about as disreputable as the My Little Pony movie. What a rough year it’s been for animated feature films.
-
I find myself particularly fond of My Little Pony’s big cities. Canterlot has a certain mystique, the Crystal Empire is gorgeous, and Manehattan has a modern charm which always feels so fresh. The latter probably doesn’t fit what the show started out as, but I enjoy it all the same. I’m an urbanite at heart, and while the show’s castles and small towns and wild spaces all have their own charms, I often get excited for big city stories.

As much as I like most Discord episodes, the success of season 7's "Discordant Harmony" in making Discord less of a jerk makes his S4-6 episodes feel like half-measures. I enjoy his awfulness, but perhaps it's not ideally suited for this particular show, and I hope the writers continue to experiment with making him more sensitive without diminishing his creativity or his freewheeling attitude.
-
You've gotta give SciTwi credit: thus far, we haven't seen her make children uncomfortable, which cannot be said for her pony counterpart.
-
I really try not to lash out at people for liking Starlight Glimmer, but her recent surge in popularity continues to baffle me. Am I the only person who thinks she was more interesting back in season 6?

Personal Preference m8.
I'm sure you say the same about more people liking season 5 and 7 more than 6 or older seasons. And from what I can tell, you seem to be in the minority that doesn't like those, so maybe that's why it baffles you.
Not to offend, but if you ask me it seems like you're just a contrarian. idk ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
-
@Celli What's peculiar about that is that I don't try to be a contrarian, it just sorta happens. Weird.

This new Equestria Girls short series is genuinely the most confident and focused Equestria Girls has felt since at least Friendship Games. Were it not for the 3-minute length, they might even reach the heights of Rainbow Rocks. And it's certainly better than what the show's doing right now, because it's simple and humorous and doesn't beat you over the head with its morals. Seemingly because it doesn't have a whole lot of morals, but hey, has Equestria Girls ever had much in that area?
Still hoping for bigger things, such as Sunset finally getting a chance to return to Equestria - preferably in something which isn't an epic battle with a villain; 22 minutes would be fine for me - and it's not quite what brought me to My Little Pony in the first place, but these have potential. They even gave Sunset hobbies! Next she needs flaws and goals. And, hopefully, a human counterpart. On that subject, I still want a short of the human and pony mane six interacting.
R.I.P. Princess Sunlight shipping, though. I've gotten scraps, but I see no hope of future material. I still kinda miss when Princess Twilight had anything to do with this series. Maybe something in the future.

If we ever find out the truth about Pinkie Pie, I suspect we will all immediately regret it.
-
-
@Lambdadelta How does she ignore the laws of reality all the time? Somehow, I don't think we will like the answer.
-
-
I like a lot of the subject matter that "The Perfect Pear" deals with, and I feel like there's a good moral or two in there, but I still can't quite put it into words. Anyone got a better grasp on that?
