Wow, I just posted a less detailed explaination. and then I saw this. man all I had to do was scroll down, and I wouldn't've posted mine. and your explanation makes way more sense.

First i need to tell you that if you want friendship games to remain unspoiled stop reading, and i have no idea how much of what i talk about is a spoiler or how much of it you the reader, will consider a spoiler. The movies always hint at explaining how magic works in the human world, but they never fulfill our need of the how it works. so I will provide a simple explanation (or as simple as it gets when it comes to me). and like i said in my other post called Cutie mark conundrum, if you have your own opinion on what i'm about to say, feel free to say it in the comments, and you do not have to agree with my opinion. the problems about magic are too numerous in the movie, so i'll explain what i consider the basics such as, Why magic is so chaotic and music based Why the element of magic turned Sunset evil How the sirens pendant works How Twilight's pendant works. Why Twilight's pendant turned her evil Well the first question seems quite obvious to me, the elements of harmony are not present. and with the element of magic own its own has no limitations and none of the other elements to put it into harmony and prevent it from becoming disharmonic. along with the fact the tree of harmony doesn't exist. The answer to the first question in mind. without the other elements to restrict it, it gave Sunset the magic she was looking for. but with all that magic she was easily corrupted by it. and once it was gone she became aware of what she had done which is all i have to say. The sirens are a strange bunch, they are creatures that turned into humans when they passed through the portal. this doesn't have much to do with the pendants so I'll move on. it's obvious that the magic they use involves music and I do not think this is the same form of magic used in the equestria universe, which like i said is pretty obvious and the magic the mane six use is the same magic the sirens use, but instead they use a song instead of a spell specifically a song that cancels out the sirens song. So, Twilight wanted to learn how equestrian magic works. so she built a device to do it for her. this device itself must've been designed to detect and capture magic, Twilight's intention was that this device would gather information once the magic was captured but by gathering all that magic in one place she created disharmonic magic which upon being released in the final showdown corrupted her and luckily she was convinced the magic she had in her hands was corrupting her and she turned good. If there is something wrong with the theory or a gaping plot hole. let me know below.

Bronies have tried, and failed on some occasions and succeeded in others, to answer how Cutie marks work. but here i will explain that problems such as: Cutie Pox (the sickness) The magical mystery problem. And 'Our town' Are not caused by Cutie marks themselves if you have your own opinion on what i'm about to say, feel free to say it in the comments, and you do not have to agree with my opinion. First, Cutie marks themselves. how do they work? well Twilight explains them as: The representation of a ponies talent. and that is what they are something a pony earns them when they discover their true talent. Now onto Cutie Pox. How did Apple Bloom catch it? and why did it do what it did? well, A heart's desire gives a pony/creature what they desire most. in Apple Bloom's case it gave her a Cutie mark. but if A heart's desire works that way, then why did it give her Cutie pox? you may ask. well, the heart's desire couldn't decide what cutie mark to give her, and she hadn't earned it yet or had one on mind, so it gave her all the Cutie marks. but since they weren't her Cutie mark or her true talent the talents of the Cutie marks forced themselves upon Apple Bloom. Which brings me to 'Our town' Starlight changed the Cutie marks of everypony in 'Our town'. so why were they all equal? when Twilight and her friends had their Cutie marks forcibly removed and replaced with equal signs. and those equal signs were actually the representation of a talent and that talent is equality meaning every pony had the talent of equality, resulting in everypony being the same. Magical mystery cure is a bit more complicated, let's just say that the elements had more to do with the memory loss than the Cutie marks themselves. but why is that? these are the elements of harmony we are talking about. by swapping what those elements are, you change them from harmonic to disharmonic because they are no longer what they are supposed to be. this could result in the mane six's destinies being changed and as a result their Cutie marks.

It's a list of powerful ponies so i couldn't include Tirek. Twilight would be further down the list, but she is an alicorn. And i did move her down the list, and i do consider her on the level of Starswirl.
