      Changing names temporary has one huge disadvantage, it can be taken by others. There is no protection, nor rules against this.

      While it is against the rules to have duplicate accounts, if one were created from another IP, it could potentially lock one's user name indefinitely.

      I hope no one does this.

      It is still possible for a new member to claim a name, and never know about it, never post. It is bad, but possible.

       

      One of the reasons you should always keep your user name without changing it.

      It is different with images, which are copyright, a user name is slightly more valuable as it identifies who you really are on this forum (to others). This forum has only one identification for a user, and it is a number. That way, the forum can track user name changes in tags, at some degree at least.
