And, as for why I included it to begin with, it just kinda looked kewl... Needed a good reason why wristwatch, then needed a good reason why shiny magic deflector, then needed a good reason why survived magical incident due to badprofessor, then decided that Twilight seems like just the type of Celestia's School for Gifted Unicorns affiliate to figure out some obscure magical ailment that perplexes everypony else for no apparent reason besides for the sake of being a nerd.
