  1. Is it bad that I enjoy devising lore of a particular kind for my original story idea far more than people normally enjoy reading about said kind of lore?

I mean, sure there's an audience for intense backstories and intricate magic, but I'm talking mathematically sound fictional physical equations governing the baseline behaviour of said magic. Balanced units and geometrical analogies and graphs and trigonometric functions and dimensionless parameters and everything.

I'm having an absolute ball working through it all, but I'm entirely unsure whether more than a handful of other people would care enough to even take a second glance at the thing, let alone ever embrace it the way some people embrace the histories and lore of various fantasy/sci-fi franchises.

    1. Frostgage

      Frostgage

      I remember being very disappointed when I learned that a human running at extreme speeds would perish near instantly ;-;

But even so I can totally see how fun that would be. I love the science (or possibly lack thereof hehe) behind Misaka's Railgun

  2. I have considered writing a fanfiction, in fact, but I came up with so much assorted lore for it that it divulged irreconcilably from the source material and ended up morphing into more of an original story idea. Turns out I mostly just like inventing lore. Skateboarding. Mancala is pretty nifty, and so's Othello/Go. I do like ancient strategy games; only the most elegantly simple survive as long as those two have. I am going to guess a little bit that you find her interesting and slightly attractive, correct? If so, any particular reasons why? If not, then I must have misunderstood. (I hope I'm not being weird or nosy. ) I was mostly joking about the attractiveness aspect, but I certainly consider her an intensely interesting character - an enigmatic, intelligent, and highly skilled loner, with a culture and background as yet untouched by the show. And those vivid turquoise eyes do draw one's gaze, it must be said. A fair bit; at bare minimum I need to know how not to murder them as part of my course in wastewater engineering. If inhaling modern concrete dust can kill you, inhaling ancient pyramid-rock dust compounded with decomposition by-products would most definitely do likewise, methinks. Nowadays they generally use face masks and air safety tests when excavating. Google on night mode. Suicide attempts have never been so lucrative a profession. Actual magic? I used to have a casual headcanon that it involved altering the perception of those around them but Ocellus' stunt this season in knocking down an entire tower of the School of Friendship while in an enlarged form mostly jossed that. It clearly consists of a 'green flash of light' that alters the composition of their body, sometimes even adding and subtracting large amounts of mass, as with Ocellus' aforementioned transformation, but what makes that possible is definitely beyond anything easily explainable in terms of physics. In space. ur mom Because she wanted to. I watched a drama about that dog once. I was the only one not to cry, as I recall. Probably random ritualistic impalements. Alternate feasible purposes include random ritualistic incinerations, random ritualistic dissections, and random ritualistic defenestrations. Hey, Pratchett did establish that Death is a cat person... Ah, cross-franchise queries never fail to intrigue. A quick consultation of the Star Wars wiki tells me that lightsabers are made out of magnetically confined plasma and only certain forms of energy shield and materials that conduct electromagnetic energy very well can deflect them. Notable examples include other lightsabers, electrified metallic weapons of specific design (electrostaffs etc.), a material called cortosis with extremely high energy absorption and transmission properties (although it is itself relatively weak), and an esoteric alloy called Mandalorian iron that is physically durable enough to resist almost all forms of damage (including direct blaster shots). Another glance through the Marvel wiki shows that Captain America's shield is capable of deflecting or absorbing effectively all forms of energy, especially direct kinetic energy, thermal energy, vibrational energy, and, most relevantly, electromagnetic blasts of a magnitude up to and including point-blank crushing blows from a fully energised Mjolnir. It therefore seems safe to say that Cap's shield would deflect even the high-temperature electromagnetically confined plasma of lightsabers, due to its vast physical durability and energy absorption properties - rather similar in behaviour to a combination of cortosis and Mandalorian iron, in a sense.
  3. @dragon4111 @Passion @Denim&Venom @reader8363 @Buck Testa @Arid_Blitz Just a heads-up: I'll be out of town for the next two days. Big shiny interview in the next city over.
  4. @Buck Testa Thank ye kindly. Post is up now; repost at will.
  5. @Buck Testa @Passion Duality slumped down into her chair, office door locked behind her, and planted her forehead firmly onto the desk in front of her. "Blegh," she mumbled through a mouthful of the frazzled hair falling loose over her face. "What a day." Get some water; you're dehydrated. "You hush," she grimaced. "I'm responsible enough to make bad life decisions if I want to." Not when they affect your mind and thus me. I know my rights. "You have no rights," the professor retorted, glancing irritably up from the desk at nothing in particular. "I checked for you once, and the only legal status you potentially bear the right to be accorded is the 'insanity' in 'innocent by reason of'." I can't hear you over the sound of your neurons expiring of thirst. Duality's eyes flickered as she abruptly dismissed the tiresome banter in favour of processing the events of the day. >open D:\mind1\>_ folders:memory, emotion, thought, other D:\mind1\memory\longterm\>_ folders:artificial, natural, unnatural.pent, recovery D:\mind1\memory\longterm\artificial\professional\miscellaneous\Potential_Foreshadowing.ccpt New Entry:>_ Miss Druantia Duality pulled an assorted fistful of objects out of her pocket and dumped them unceremoniously on the desk in front of her, sitting upright now that she had loose ends to take note of for later tying up. She plucked a single crumpled leaf out of the eclectic miscellany and opened the book on botany she'd taken out of the library what seemed like an age ago. Gave her magic free reign over local plants while entering campus; I pocketed a loose leaf from one of the more mutated ones while picking up a pebble for her use as a magical focus point - visually identified as cannabis She removed five complementary shards of basalt from the pile, once a single river-rounded rock but now sliced into pieces with unsettling cleanness. Shredded aforementioned 3-inch-diameter basalt pebble when I gave it to her for use as a mundane focus point for magic; aura much wider than it appears The professor extracted a small hermetically sealed vial of Abomination ash she'd managed to snatch in the melee. Shredded duelling hall with her rogue magic; magic effectively has a life of its own and is powerful enough to generate banes She paused in thought for a moment, contemplating events that had yielded no souvenir. Recited proper body disposal techniques to me when I mentioned student legend regarding Blackrose's personal graveyard cellar New Entry:>_ Ms Ley Uttered the name 'Edna' in her surface thought processes shallowly and emphatically enough that I involuntarily picked up on it - utterance carried contextual and cognito-emotional characteristics strongly indicating that she was referring to the demon Edna described by Avilova Duality picked up an origami cube of paper from her desk, the final item of the original pile, and turned it over in her hands, examining its folds closely. Near-subconsciously folded a piece of paper into a box shape as a distraction from moderate internal psychological strain - paper is folded 'through' itself without cuts or tears in a way not possible in three-dimensional Euclidean space Last of all, she slipped the Stylus out of her back pocket and placed it gently in front of her, noting with some satisfaction and relief that it seemed to be behaving stably again. New Entry:>_ Stylus Gave me a very unusual dream when I accidentally impaled myself on it in the process of fainting - possible communication attempt Heated up to ridiculous temperatures soon after dream incident - almost burnt through the protection runes on the inside of my pocket >save >exit On the other side of campus, in the administrative department, a notification popped up on an otherwise vacant laptop screen: 'A shared file has been updated.' Back in her office, Duality carefully arranged the collection of random objects within a drawer of her desk before burying her head in her hands anew. "The paperwork from all this is going to take days," she moaned.
  6. @Buck Testa Hate to interrupt your sumptuous character-building, but could you temporarily rescind that post of yours (replace with [blank] text and repost original text a bit later)? I should've said as much, but I'm most of the way through an IC transition post. I should have it done within an hour or two; I just didn't reckon on your speed.
  7. Duality would most probably be inundated with mounds of paperwork during those few days, and if classes are postponed until the end of the timeskip due to all the things that need to be sorted out around campus in the meantime then it's quite feasible that they wouldn't meet during that time. Keep that sentence prepped. It's quite mutual, my good sir.
  8. Our fine forums is school age already. Don't they grow up so fast. *wipes tear*

Gosh, that's pretty! Albeit, perhaps a bit clunky to wear, but I love it!

  10. That was just evening dinner. It was intended to be something of a get-together for characters to mingle, but I suspect too much has happened for any character to be in the mood for idle mingling, not to mention that most characters already banded up for a while in the duel and its aftermath as it is. This could be compromised, if classes (and the disciplinary investigation) were postponed several days for campus cleanup, although it would mean that the timeskip couldn't be more than a week, since learning must go on. What are your thoughts on this, @Buck Testa, @dragon4111, @reader8363?
  11. @Denim&Venom @Passion @Buck Testa @Arid_Blitz @dragon4111 @reader8363 How long do we all want to timeskip for? A full week or more like a few days? The duelling hall could probably be up and running within a fortnight or so, since there's some pretty skilled geomancers etc. employed by the university who can assist, so the construction would be well underway post-timeskip. Does anyone have any changes or events or anything that they want to have taken place in the skipped time? Any relationship-building will have to be discussed with the other roleplayer/s involved, of course. There's also the matter of disciplinary consequences for Mindy, Miko, Ghalan, and Ira for variously contributing to the utter demolition of the hall. Dru's already been issued suppression bracelets; it seems realistic that the pair of staff who messed up the duelling runes, the duelling opponent who was partially responsible for the white-hole explosion, and the other teacher implicated in the explosion may potentially face repercussions for the whole affair as well. Nothing close to suspension of duty or anything, since it was a collection of accidents and underestimations, but perhaps some clipping of magical wings, so to speak (not to single out Frosthawk :P). Denim, Dragon, and Passion: let me know what you think would be reasonable and I can issue appropriate sentences.

      Why not both?!!?

  14. Go Team Everfree! We're up against paired Flutters and we've still got over third of the votes! Some art for the uncertain:
  15. Dr. Duality's not really the sort to blame certain people to the exclusion of all others, but she'll definitely be asking how the duelling pentagrams she so painstakingly maintained were circumvented with no apparent effort.
  16. Turpitudinous means revolting or horrid, scaramouch means a loser or words to similar effect, coprophageous means something that eats excrement (usually said of insects), a cuspidor is a spittoon, epistemophobic people are people who are afraid of knowledge, and a poltroon is along the same lines as 'scurvy-mouthed yellowbelly'.
  17. Uh, turpitudinous scaramouch, coprophageous cuspidor, epistemophobic poltroon. Does this satisfactorily fulfil your request?
  18. The Moustache Amigos are the unofficial mascots of this entire tournament. Everyone loves them, but not enough to actually vote for them. Petition for an 'Honourable Mention' award with a complementary tin of moustache wax.
  19. Noted and planning similarly. The duelling hall interactions are still going strong, though, and it's multi-character relationship building solid enough that I'm loath to just shut it down for the sake of brevity. You might want to start working along the lines of settling Dru into her room for the night and perhaps getting her thoughts in order regarding the events of the day, like I'm moving towards doing with Duality and Passion is doing with Ley. Dru and Ley are next-door, too, so you can start establishing how that dynamic might work if you're planning on waking up Dru anytime within the span of today.

There's a reason why it is said that people desire the unachievable the most. Philosophy is no different. It was created by men for men. So it's just as flawed as we are.

It's essence is centered around achieving the impossible, that is answers to these questions. But it is a tiresome and uneventful pursuit.

In this particular case, the goal should not be more important than the journey. You could spend your energy in different fields of expertise. And yes, by that I mean that even though I enjoy philosophy as a whole, I fear I have to say I do not perceive it as contributory towards the advance of science and humanity.

There will always be unsolved problems. We know a lot as people, but only have a fraction of a percentage of all obtainable knowledge, if that.

Also we still have people who eat Tide Pods, so I don't have much hope.

    4. Widdershins

One could argue, technically theorhetically, that the absence of a definitive answer to any one problem is not  only the self-perpetuating end & starting point, but also the initial catalyst. If you knew who was going to win the game, would you even play?

Be glad you aren’t omnipotent or telepathic. How could you care? What would you get out of life then?... just toy with the minds & perceptions of others as by-proxy validation...?

  21. Surely you of all beings can come up with loopholes that render that objection redundant. Single-celled species of algae can grow unsettlingly large. Metaphase is the most interesting step in my eyes - the transition point between one cell and two cells.
