Widdershins: There's a time & place for everything! And that isn't now! Don't ride your bike indoors!!

Widdershins is rather a projection of my spirit & a bit like an imaginary friend. But I've been having issue clearing my mind lately, heh.

I can see you slowly pulling a bike out, out of curiosity and the lamp in the corner slowly turns around to show Oak's judgy old face like that!

  2. Have I mentioned I have two My Hero Academia OCs?

  3. So... I know you do commissions, usually paid, and as such like as not have the time for irreverent ideas of whimsy.

     But...

You want to try an exercise?

You believe that if one draws while another provides the design down to fine detail, that the creative soul of both shines through?

     I do.

    1. Lord Valtasar

      Lord Valtasar

i believe that's how every commission should be, the commissioner should give details if they have something specific in mind, that said, i have a full list atm so i can't even accept paid ones

    2. Widdershins

      Widdershins

There a point where too many details are given though? I consider it a gift just to see how the same image & idea can be translated through one’s art style. Different artist, same image, whole other world!

And i’ve got far too many ideas for my own meager skills to keep up with, much less trying to find & badger somebeing else into doing it free.

Hate to think i’m taxing a stranger beyond what they feel they accomplish. Take Widdershins. He was designed to be an eyesore!

I very much agree. Technological entertainment is all well and good, but flat glass screens really take away a lot of tactile pleasure from the reading experience, not to mention all the emptied poetic metaphors about pages turning and so on. Plus, physical books are far cheaper and more durable and don't silently extract personal information from you and sell it to faceless third-parties as you read. :mlp_wat:

As for Bookhorse faces, here's a thematic one:

  9. Know what I've always liked about the pokemon company? They've always done what they wanted to do first & foremost. Then left it to the world at large if they wanted to take that character design into their hearts & lives.

     By what I mean...

Take the Dark/Psychic typing. What amazement could be had there, huh?! A wielder of both trickery, dark magics & underhanded tactics! A caster of vaguely undefined magical, mind based powers! A mage of the Darkness & Light!! ...and what does Game Freak design for us...?

    A floopsy-doo cutie-pie squidy!

    thGEXXJP50.jpg.9a08f355dee0768556c7679716d70a13.jpg

It mainly floats along on magic & flips around a lot. It's signature move is Topsy-Turvy.

When it gets bigger, it pretends to be a Power Rangers villain to dramatically mind control others with its flashing lights.

...still just a squishy squiddy buddy!

"Hey guys. What about that squid design we've been sitting on? We gonna do that?"

"Eh... sure. Shouldn't it be water though? We have too many of that already though."

"...well, we haven't done Dark Psychic though..."

  12. You can count me in on the Sinnoh remakes.

Would really love to reuse my Sinnoh Pokemon Trainer OC again. “Black” Pearl, Dark type specialist & procurer of rare items for those that don’t ask questions or have “morals.”

She’s a punk-goth, mostly because her mother was a Contest celebrity & pressured her to be as girly as possible.

Love how that game’s file has maybe eight original pokemon... and several dozen boxes filled with suspiciously buff pokemon bosses that clearly don’t exist around Sinnoh or are even legal.

I'm not gonna lie, Sinnoh is one of my favourite regions in all of pokemon. I remember playing Diamond version for 2 WHOLE years!!!  It was the last pokemon game I enjoyed playing :mlp_rarity: I dunno...there's something about the later gens that I don't like...

      @SolarFlare13

Well, one could say that they've been more heavily populated areas recently. Like, It can be intimidating to have televisions everywhere. The more urban, the more busy it can seem. I loved Sinnoh for its being the most northern & mountainous & natural. Likely the most like playing Galar!

...I kind of want to restart my Pearl version but I'm afraid of losing what I got in there.

So hard to do a monotype run with the rarer typings!

  14. Lot of Fuss & Bother these days about supposed "Leaks" of what the new pokemon starters will turn out to be. I feel I can allay those worries.

Pokémon has its artstyle, sufficed to say, I know their work when I see it. But furthermore, Starters have a very distinct spirit to their development.

They're the first ones you see, they have to mean much to you, they have to give this air of growing up & maturing. They don't just "Get Bigger." There's always this little style flourish, an extravagance no one else but Game Freak would have thought up.

They become something to be proud of. Take the one that gets poopood on most. Did Emboar turn out to be just "Bigger fire pig?" No, it got this flaming, total boss popped collar of gangster flames! It got these golden decorations on its waist!...and it was still a bigger pig.

But they do follow the spirit of what we're initially shown. My Theory: Starter Pokémon follow the theme of Cool, Tough, Cute.

We want a bulky strong (kinda doofy) one, a thin agile skilled one, and a magical fame-inclined (somewhat effeminate) pretty one!

And what we got this time around for species to work off of, is monkey, rabbit & lizard.

Very, very rarely do we ever see monkies or lizards portrayed as magical, thin pretty like we got with Delphox & Primarina. Nor is easy to make a Rabbit anything less that fully cute at any stage of it.

We got Grookey already utilizing tools as its design & species (something we don't actually see very often in pokemon! Tools!) so that already solidifies it as Strength.

Scorbunny has Speed clearly already locked in, but Sobble has its emotional sensitivity buildt into its design...

What I hope for, is a clarification in design style for these little guys. I'm hoping, personally, that Sobble might be Water/Ice... even if that is kinda common a typing. We need an ice starter!

And I'm pretty set on Scorbunny being Fire/Fairy & Grookey Grass/Rock.

    1. SolarFlare13

      SolarFlare13

Personally, I think Grookey is gonna be a Grass / Fighting type, Sobble will be a Water / Poison type (I don't think it's gonna be a water / dragon type, but THAT would be AWESOME!!! X3) and Scorbunny will either be a Fire / Ground type or a Fire / Fighting (which I know will piss a lot of fans off XD)

As for the supposed "leaks"? yeah, it's getting kinda annoying...

one particular poketuber by the name of RuffletRowlitt is constantly making "rumour" videos for Pokémon Sword and Shield. While I do appreciate sharing the info with us, I'm not gonna believe any of it for a second. If it's NOT on Serebii.Net, it's totally fake. I've been looking up serebii since 2005 and they've pretty much told the truth during that time. To be fair, I REALLY want them to show the NEXT pokemon direct. I wanna see what the Galar Starters evolve into :3

...and yeah, most of the fan-art designs for the final evolutions for the starters are...questionable at best. :derp:

    2. Widdershins

      Widdershins

If they really wanted it to be believable, they'd put the Game Freak logo on there!

Thing is, I know the company enough to know they wouldn't do the same thing they've done before. We already have a Grass/Fight starter. And Water/Poison is a bit too common & expected. Heck, Greninja would have made a good water-poison type.

  15. Just wanted to let any nearby Pokémon fans in on good news. We're finally getting the famous Jerk Rival back in our games!

I know this, because I am psychic. ...and also because of predictable design trends.

Take a look here at what is confirmed as the starting area in Galar:

53155032_Galar-Map-Art(2).jpg.4f86e79f80b0f465b4ece5d29a6935d8.jpg The small, country house has been proven to be ours, but note the nearby landmarks.

Right across from your house is a notably bigger one. Better roofing, loads more windows, payed groundskeeping, heck, even has a specifically designed battlefield for this realm's premier dogfi-*cough* worldwide sport! Somebody nearby has clearly been a Pokémon Trainer long before you ever knew about it & started in on it only now. And this person wants everyone around to know about it too.

Check Westward. Like, mere meters from your small cottage... there's a wood so dense & untrackable it doesn't show up any better than any of the numerous caves or tunnels in the region. Pretty odd to have something so dangerous right where you start off, mere minutes into the game. Why, even a local would stay away from some place clearly harboring large fauna! ...yet there's a clear path leading right into it.

Because it's the first place you go in the games. Why? Because an event must happen there. You wouldn't go in of your own accord, since its a forest you know like your backyard. ...unless the posh twit next door things yer a bloody pansy & drags you off there on a competition.... exactly like a rich local snob would. What's he got to fear? He's been training for months now with daddy's money behind him! You're just a noob!

You probably get rescued by the local professor too after things go awry. Because we've seen their lab surrounded in plantlife, so such a scholar would surely know of the local flora enough to be a reliable presence there.

Which... by merit of design... puts three major plot characters in the same, brooding, antagonistic area! Sun & Moon started off with an escapee being tackled by the local god... and we're starting off here surrounded by antagony!

Things look good for our storyline!

Wind doesn't get alot of support & respect, I feel. It moves around the planet constantly at unimaginable speeds, yet from no origin point as most mass does. The wind simply just blows of its own accord.

It's logical that a being that evolves on a realm grows to take what it can of its elements. But you don't have to hunt down the air as you must for water or the fruits of the Earth. Air is ever present, ready for your intake when you wish yourself to; yet it wraps around the planet on a near daily basis.

The wind can cut or caress, guide or drift you off course. It has no form, yet is none the less real.

      Widdershins

Looking over my Statistical Consensus on Pokémon Species, I predict some six new, separate species of dragon in Galar. Considering about half will likely have another two evolutions... that's quite a fair bit! The most, if not more than, what we saw in Unova! Of course, that depends on if the three Dragon Ultra Beasts count as legitimate pokemon, or just extra bosses.

Trouble is though that I've not liked most dragon designs in Pokémon. Little too pudgy-cutesy to come across as legitimate dragons in my opinion. Do adore Zweilious & Flygon though!

With some potential six designs to work with... that might change come Galar! Might get some genuinely intimidating drakes!...like Salamence was!

Yeah, I totally agree. Most of the dragons in pokemon don't have that aggressive look. (with the exception of Salamence and Hydreigon) :mlp_please: when you look at gyarados and Charizard, it makes you wonder why there's not dragon types :mlp_rarity: I do hope we get more dragons this time 'round...

Salamence is without a doubt MY favourite pseudo legendary B)

  22. I'm on to you, Pokémon Company!

Been doing some research. Oddly enough, no one has tabulated how many pokemon SPECIES there are. Sure, its easy enough to say that we're at some 800 pokemon these days, but when one entity can evolve some three times to triple the entries it has, that number is awfully inflated.

In the spirit of narrowing it down to actual individual pokemon you can meet & logically discerning its "evolutions" as a natural part of its growth process, we can come to a more distinct term of what a pokemon "Species" is.

Excluding alternate forms that're intrinsic to the pokemon's biological talents or the temporary anomaly of Mega-Evolution, we can see that as an addition onto prior capabilities. To whit, Arceus, Type: Null, Castform & Ditto are Normal types to use as a sort of "catch-all" typing. Counting Regional Variants as distinct species due to irreversible changes, though Oricorio is an exception due to its capacity for one individual to "magically" change itself to fit its location by trait of diet. In the Exeggutor example, even if the evolution happens to both be grass despite divergent evolution... still counts as separate species.

"Ultra Beasts" are excluded. By merit of being so far out of the world's capacity to understand and only loosely fitting into what typings are attributed. Not unlike a Bidoof existing in the real world & defying normal human's capacity to classify.

And so, as follows in order of least to greatest, The amount of each Pokémon Species in accordance to typing, and thereby the equivalent rarity of typing:

Starting off, of course, with my favorite: The Ice Typing! Clocking in at only 22 individual species!

(Ice types? You probably haven't heard of them!~~*)

Closely following by merit of logical rarity, the Dragons, at 26.

     Then, as following:

Ghost: 27, Fighting: 28, Fifth place tie at 29 with Fairy & Poison (Despite there not being any cases of a Poison/Fairy), Electric at 30, Dark: 31, Fire: 33 (Quite low for what's supposed to be one of the three most important & famous typings.), Two ties in a row here at Ninth place being Rock & Steel (due greatly to both types commonly interacting) at 34, then again with Bug & Ground at 36, Grass abundant as it should be at 46, and from here, the numbers climb quite suspiciously high with the Twelfth spot of Psychic at 50 species (because, of course, when you're magic, it matters little where your evolve to live), Flying at 61 due mostly to its vast capacity to splash into so many other typings as shown in the secondmost common typing, with due reason...

Normal types at Sixty-Four cases. Which is greatly inflated due to thirteen of those cases being Normal/Flying and essentially just Birb. In some two more generations, I can see that number rising high enough to merit a Nineteenth type of just Birb. At thirteen cases of Birb, that essentially credits Flying as being approximately over 20% of Normal's typing as well.

And... in what would require a drumroll of dramaticness sake were it not already obvious to most, the Most Common Species in the Pokémon world!... Water, at 68 species.

What's important about all this... is that Patterns Develop!

With this, I notice trends of how many species of a typing are made per generation... because, of course, Balance is of utmost importance to Game Freak, and this shows.  ...Shows so much, that I daresay I can predict what pokemon will come out now!

Take Water for example. First generation was quite literally SWAMPED in water types, and it slowly trickled out to the point where, despite our last region being islands... we only had some eight designs for water bound animals... as opposed to the 16 we had in first gen. Sufficed to say, Galar won't be getting many fishies.

But now the Ice typing... It's had a slow build. But an oddly even release of four species per generation... until these last two generations, where we got only two & then three... two of which were redesigns. Which either means Galar will be blanketed in Ice types... or they're phasing my typing out...

In the merit of Dragon types, there's been a dependable ebb & flow of dragons in every game we've had. Off, then on again, reliably. And this generation... We're in for a tide of Dragons!!

I put all the type total numbers for each generation into Google Sheets and played around with the inbuilt graphing capabilities it has. :ticking:

      Behold:

      image.thumb.png.45589a543af5fd7d3d9d59d8343cfae2.png

It's quite stark that there was a serious dip in numerical type-diversity in Gen 6 (Steel type being apparently the only one unaffected), but it seems to be looking up in G7. Also, I tried putting in some rudimentary overall trendlines:

      image.thumb.png.5a5412db15d2a383aca0a42630d95941.png

They're all straight lines, so hardly a particularly accurate trend indicator, but they do give some rough approximation to an all-gen trend for types. What're your predictions looking like?

      Widdershins

Yeee! Lookit all of it come together in its beautiful patterns!

You're being such a good influence on my author, Duality. You know that? Pshaw & poppycock. "Order..."

Though, I must say it gets a bit confusing telling the colors of the lines apart well enough to track path. Reckon you don't know the corresponding, ingame colors for each type but... given eighteen choices, it'll all blend together a fair bit anyhow.   ...like... Dark AND Steel (although, like the Fairy approach, Steel did get a retroactive entry for first gen that I didn't count.) both clocked in at zero initially but I can't... quite see where they go.

      Quote

It's quite stark that there was a serious dip in numerical type-diversity in Gen 6

What? I do beg to differ! That's diversity we should be getting! Rather even in distribution betwixt 5-1 range rather than the stunning spread we got in Gen One where Water, Flying and Normal (...Bug?) accounted nearly double than most other types! A good ratio, I say, better have five of one & perhaps one of another as opposed to some sixteen over a more average of four or so!

I'd say this predicts quite a lot, don't you? Note how all lines look as if to converge, a more finite focus on balancing out types rather than each line doing its own thing, eh? Take Ghost's line for example, as much as it veers up & down, safe to say when one gen is lacking, the other generation will balance it out with higher numbers of that type. Meaning, in this upcoming Generation Eight... we ought see an increase higher than its average, no?

Water & Flying are on a steep decline for good reason. Doubt we'll see another Water/Flying type to risk putting both of those above average again. Though, it could be said a Normal type has enough flexibility in making easy designs for that it should stay reasonably high... despite that odd dip in Gen 6...

Dragons are in for an incline, which is good news & I do desperately hope the same holds true for my Ice types! Ice does seem to have a pretty steady, calm pace for itself... but it has quite the dearth to compensate for these last two seasons... its kind of the losing team here.

...oh, do hope they aren't planning on phasing out the Ice type. It's already pretty weakly balanced.

Muahah. My plan for brainwashing your author with the enchantingly intricate patterns of Order is falling into place perfectly.

I don't know where Dark ends up, but Steel you can track backwards by noting that there were 9 Steel types in Gen 7. I may not have been able to fix the terrible overlap issue, but I figured you'd at least seize the chance for revelling in the colour-confusion. How disappointed Widdershin must be in you.

Oh, no, I didn't mean the diversity in terms of ratios between types, I meant that there were far less types in total in Gen 6. It looks very sparse in terms of Pokemon introduced, actually, and I think its numerical bottleneck may be at least partially responsible for the appearance of all the lines converging.

The Dragon type looks very promising; it seems to have been on an overall increase since the beginning. It does seem to be on a consistent zig-zag pattern, however, so there might end up being less in this coming generation than in Gen 7. Either way there should be plenty for you to squee over, though.

Definitely do let me know how all your predictions turn out when Gen 8 comes out. All it takes to get me invested in something is to show me a complex graph and some theories about it. :mustache:

  25. Know what I'm hyped for most with the new Pokémon region & generation? The Landscape!

    Spoiler

    Galar-Map-Art.thumb.jpg.be6f5ec24d4810d53c2d260383003d98.jpg

Just look at all those majestic, cold, snowy peaks! Misty, dense forest! Places to get LOST in!!!

Says so much for the potential types of wildlife we might find there! Britain is known for its hunting, so no doubt more deer like Sawsbuck & Stantler! Maybe some wolves! And you HAVE to put in more sheep pokemon for what's basically the sheepherding capitol of the world! We'll get some right strong, sturdy, wooly, fluffy, wild beasties that really give you a sense that the world would eat you alive if you didn't have your trusty partners at your back!

Just lookit that design! There's that untrackable forest right next to where you start, as if you find yourselves lost in unfamiliar deep woods before you're rescued by the Pofessor, then after your hometone, it's a denser cave & then a pathless Loch marsh! They really punch you from the get-go that you're on your own in the wild!

Better yet! The two types most strongest represented in the Galar map? All the Ice on those peaks & snowing in villages! There's gonna be at least three new species of Ice Types! I can feel it!

And lookit the huge, Bloodborne-esque dragon castle! If that's not a sign of a whole handful of dragon type species, I dunno what is! Good news, for dragon fans like @SolarFlare13!
