      Theoretically you can use the word as you see fit, after all lots of words have changed their meaning in this way. That being said, by literal definition, side by side.... all they did was add 4 more letters to whelmed and expand the definitions some. They mean the same thing, unless one wants to suggest submerge and overcome have utterly different definitions now.
