      AAAAIIIIICTUALLY... Its not about the country of Ireland. Technically its supposed to be about Saint Patrick himself, historically having died on this, the seventeenth of March. This also coincides with the ending of a religious fasting period in which alcohol is then once more allowed. It is supposed to be in memory of the bringing of Christianity to Ireland.       ...than the "lucky" fourleaf symbolic more of Irish Patriotism. But really, the Irish have spent more than enough time fighting for their independence to warrant at least one day. ...and also an excuse to make up for the alcohol consumption they missed out on.

      The color blue is supposed to be symbolic of St.Patrick while Green of Irish patriotism. What with green being the majority of the holiday's presence with four-leaf clovers holding dominant; one could construe this as the original sentiment being consumed & overpowered by newer symbolism. Holidays, like most things, evolve over time and you are welcome to celebrate it as you wish.
