Queen Chrysalis is so misunderstood by the ponies. She is egotistical and a warmonger, but she has a hive to take care of. One that takes priority over the lives of a few foreigners called 'ponies'.

Or outright murder.
Generation One just loved wholesale slaughtering its villains. Original Tirek was blown to shadowy fragments. One dude was slivered into a thousand tiny crystalline fragments. Think a few were tossed down bottomless pits Star Wars style.
DudeBro! You want further development on Chrysalis? I've got a few out of the several comicbooks she's appeared in, she is unrepentedly, violently evil! It's very clear that the writers of the show/books treat her as the sort to use her faceless spawn as mere cannon fodder. Discord, I can argue, was never truly evil. He went from Chaotic Evil to Chaotic Good... that was probably intentional on the writers part. Positives about her can only be speculated on but cruelty can be much more easily defined. Even in the one scene we've seen her actually looking over the grubling hatching we can see a sneer much akin to "Yes... you will all make fine soldiers."
Trust me on this! I'm a Mayadere-Fan! I'm usually the one to lean more towards pathos & excusable, tragic backstories! She's the best example of a traditional villainess imho! Not the most evil, perhaps but...

Well, it has always seemed more like she treats the role of the Hive as an extension of herself. The Hive going hungry means she lacks minions & dominion. After all, hasn't there been an episode recently where she intentionally doesn't want a better, easier route to feed & thereby a better life for her subjects if it means dialing back her own diabolical plots?
