Backstory for one of my characters.

In another dimension there was the planet Gaea. A pretty much exact clone of our world in surface and life forms, etc. Humans evolved on this world and advanced into various different civilizations like on our world. However the one difference lies in how these civilizations acted. They were barbaric and much like our own in our past but they didn't change. A black crystal comet with a trail of black shadowy mist entered the solar system. Hundreds of years later the comet was going to collide with earth. By this time the states in the world were in a massive cold war the likes of our own. The comet was discovered, it's original designation 994-41. But the people of the world named it Bernael after a fallen angel. Some cult groups across the world had prepared for the time the black serpent would come as their scriptures had told them it would come one day and one day, someone in a far time would become one with. This serpent would cleanse humanity of it's sin.

For once the people of the world realized there was something different out there. Something strange, but it was also going to end their world if they didn't work together. 5 nuclear warheads was sent out to stop the comet but most of them missed except for one which cracked the comet into 2.

after the comet was split into 2 pieces. One of the comet parts hit the great plains of North America while another hit the sands of Africa. The people there saw the great serpent like trail going across the sky, took pictures and notes of it, kept them with themselves while they were underground to survive. Eventually society rebuilt itself by 9,000 years had passed.

Eventually she ended up traveling to the impact zone of the comet herself and despite many warnings she ventured there. A land of black crystals the side of buildings at diagonal angles, and an odd black fog covered some areas of the ground. She looked around, this is all she saw. It felt strange here. Something was surely not right here. She didn't feel this feeling before. She saw something in the distance. An obelisk with a purple eye at the top of it. Engraved into the stone. Strange symbols covered this thing. She touched this obelisk and she felt somewhat of an electrical shock. A black orb came out of the obelisk.

She looked at the black orb. It got closer to her, she backed away from it. It kept chasing her. She tripped over a rock, hurt herself and fell over but by the time she had gotten up the orb had drawn a black circle around her. Suddenly she couldn't move. Not a single muscle in her body. She could only think. She was afraid. The orb hovered over her face, and in some form of command her mouth opened as far as it could. The black orb went down her throat whole. It was uncomfortable. It was electrical. The energy within the orb spread throughout her body and cells. Merging with them. Becoming one with them. Once this was done a black laser shot up into the sky with a hint of red, and green too. Whatever happened next was a blurr to her. She awoke with a purple eyeball in her hand. One like that on the obelisk. She began to understand the abilities that were given to her. The rest they say, is history.

The comet is something older than the earth itself. It comes from a far away world, now dead.

Have you ever heard of a black dwarf star?

"A black dwarf is a theoretical stellar remnant, specifically a white dwarf that has cooled sufficiently that it no longer emits significant heat or light." Such a star would be solid in nature. The comet is a chunk of a black dwarf star. These objects are unknown so they probably have strange properties, so Maryanne's magic isn't actually real magic its properties of a star's dead core of sorts.
