      The critics hated it at the time too. Melville was financially unsuccessful as a writer as well.

      Not ALL of his work was poorly received mind you. Typee was his most popular work at the time, and received mostly favorable reviews from critics. Though it was released posthumously, Billy Budd was regarded as a masterpiece.
