Yep, everything is trying to kill you in that game. There are piranhas that jump out of hot lava, poisonous mushrooms and just about everything else you can think of trying to put you down for a dirt nap. Shigeru Miyamoto was reportedly going through some severe depression when he made The Lost Levels.

wow what usually kills me is either falling off or the hammer bros.

There are plenty of hammer bros at certain points in the game too and placed in some rather inconvenient locations.
