Even before the movie was out, there had been two sides in the community; 1. G5 is a sequel to G4 2. G5 is a complete new world At first I wanted to avoid spoilers (anf failed) to make my own decision. However, just like the G4 spoilers and leaks, it didn't work and I more or less learned about the plot and the world of G5 before watching the movie. The spoilers already let me side with the "G5 is a new world" part of the community, so that my view wasn't without any reservation. So I already had s hort list of things to look for when watching the movie to see if G5 can be based on G5 or not. Since I just watched the movie, I'm now sure that G5 might have G4 references but is not the same world. Here my reasons for believing so (just my opinion, so no drama/war pease) 1. Population We already can say that G4 Equestria's population was around 30/30/40 with 40% being the earth ponies. So yeah, the earth ponies had been more or less the "dominant" (as in existing, not ruling) race. Most people also only see Ponyville and Canterlot as the main cities of Equestria. However, the whole map was filled with towns, even bigger than Canterlot. With the map looking similar to America (around 330 citizen), we can assume that G4 Equestria had at least 100 million pony citizens up to maybe 300 million since they also had sky cities like Cloudsdale. So the whole G4 map was filled with cities, villages, towns and so on while G5 only has 3 known places. From this three places, only the pegasus city actually was big while the earth ponies (G4's dominate race) only got second and the unicorns had been few in numbers, maybe even "close to extintion" number. The question: Where did those at least 100 million ponies go? G5 only implied a possible war started by earth ponies who, let's be honest, would have gotten their butts kicked by a few elite/warrior unicorns or an air assault from the unicorns. 2. The world itself As I said above, G4 was filled with big towns and other notable places like the Everfree Forest. Hoever, aside from the building in the pegasus city, we didn't see a single ruin. Even the broken bridge doesn't count as a G4 ruin. So where did all the places like Canterlot go? Yeah, we didn't see much of the G5 world, but since Sunny's father might have been an archeologist, we should have at least see a little stuff. 3. Genes For at least 1000 years, more likely even more, the three races had relationships with each other. The cakes are a good example; two earth ponies who gave birth to a unicorn and a pegasus pony. They most likely weren't the only ponies that had a child that wasn't the same race as the parents. So why hadn't there been any offsprings of the other races? Was there some sort of giant genocide that not only killed the other tribes but also everyone, who wasn't 100% pure blooded? 4. Sun and moon G4 started with one main plot for the world: Alicorns are rising and lowering the sun and the moon. The journal of the two sisters expanded it by saying that, before Celestia and Luna, it had been the job of unicorns to rise/lower the sun/moon but even a group sooner or later lost their power by doing so. So even with a possible device, it still takes magic to do that job. That includes an automatic sun/moon cycle by using evem more magic, so that the alicorn/unicorns can rest for a few days before adding more magic In short: No magic => no sun/moon cylce => the world will die 5. Magic G4 made another thing clear; ponies need magic. They used it every day for many reasons, like keeping the food cool (ending of season 8), work or many other things. And that's just the ponies, let's not forget races that need magic to exist like Changelings. Hippogriffs/Sea ponies would have been stuck in their current form, breezies might go extinct... G4 never had any "source of magic", so I highly doubt that there is a way to just make up some artifact that suddendly is able to lock off all magic. Yes, Cozy tried it but it took a ritual and it seems unlikely that, by completing the ritual, it would leave behind a key to return magic. So no reason for the "banning/unlocking magic" crystals and even if they did it, no magic would mean a giant genocide. Humans would still do it, but not the G4 ponies. 6. Other Species By the end of G4 we not only hat the 3 pony tribes but also variations of them (bat ponies) and many other friendly species like dragons, griffin, hippogriffs, yak, changelings, kirin, zebras, breezies and a few neutral races like diamond dogs, apes (the storm kings army), pirate birds, abyssianians and many I forgot. Were did they all go? We never got any hint that there is anything except ponies in the world of G5 7. Mane 6 Almost forgot this part, so I just stick it at the end. Similar to the "no ruins" thing in point 2, it makes no sense that the G5 world knows about the mane 6 (and only about them and the princess) and how they looked like. We don't know where Sunny's father found the earth pony crystal, but the only theory, except him making up the whole story and therefore making G4 nothing but a made up story for Sunny, is, that he found a dimention mirror. The same Twilight used in Equestria Girls and Celestia in the IDW comics. The earth pony crystal could have been the power source for the mirror, showing Sunny's father the united G4 Equestria. However, the mirror was damaged so he took the crystal. Another possible way is, that the mirror was damaged, without any crystals, and someone traveled to G4 Equestria and asking for help. Twilight or Celestia or someone else created the 3 crystals to create(bring back the G5 Equestria's magic. However, somehow the crystal was stoled and two of the 3 pieces ended up in the unicorn forest and the pegasus city. Sunny's father found the third and made a plan to bring back magic. His stories about Equestria (G4) later inspired Sunny to make his plan come true after he failed, got sick and died or whatever happened to him So yeah, those are my main reasons to say that G5 is not based on G4. It's more likely that some of the G5 ancestory made up fairy tales (or religions) that showed an imaginary world (G4) that never existed in G5. Like a "we once had been united, we can be friends again" or "we once ahd been friends, stop the hate" thing. This, or the dimentional mirror plot. To me, that's way more likely than saying that a complete peaceful and united G4 world suddendly went nuts, started a few genocides, banished magic and then ended up devided plot.

I want the show to just ignore G4's story. It looks as if the makers of the show just wanted the community to stay by just saying the G5 is the sequel to G4. Feels as if they were afraid that a complete seperated show/world would scare people away, so they just tried to destroy the whole G4 world to recreate a new one. The movie was good for the story itself and to me, it would have been better without saying that G4 Equestria was destroyed. Instead they could have just say that there was a time of friendship that ended because of a crisis. Same story without making look G4 looking meaningless

The main problem of G5 is, that they tried (and failed) to make it a sequel to G4. They implied that this is the tree of harmony but in the end, it's just a tree/reference, nothing more

Q: Why should black and white people live together? A: Because they’re the same species Same goes for G5. All three races are one species so it’s only natural to sooner or later overcome their conflicts to live in harmony. The movie even showed the depression of all three races from hidden to easy to notice. Earth ponies: Always living in fear for the other two tribes Pegasi: Also living in fear but having hope because of their royals. As soon as they noticed that even they can’t fly, they got even more depressed Unicorns: Waiting for extinction. Seriously, they had no reason to exist at all with their magic being lost. So in the end, it was because of Sunny who’s letter reached Izzy that leaded to the mission to bring magic back and most likely saved ponykind (especially unicorns) from extinction.

I just watched the movie and I can say one thing for sure; the movie did make G4 references but G5 is not the same Equestria as G4. Might make an own topic for my opinion but to put it short; it's impossible that they know how the mane 6 were looking like when we didn't see any ruines at all. Not to mention the biology of the three races. Just remember the Cakes and their two foals; two earth ponies had a unicorn and a pegasus child So yeah, the movie was good but to me, it's not the sequel of G4

My fav is Rainbow Dash and I would love to be her special somepony. However, it would be a little difficult because she's an athlet and I'm more like Twilight. So in the best case, we would both help each other - I'd become more athletic while I'd help her to slow down for things like reading books, playing games or romantic - and in the worst case, we could be good friends

The closed thing that happened to me was hater content I saw during season 5. It hit me pretty hard and I was very close to leave the fandom With G4 being finished, I still can rewatch s1-8 and the special episodes, so I most likely won't quit the show anytime soon

I stopped after s9 ep02 because I didn't like the main plot change for the last season. Wanted to continue but then all the spoilers and leaks appeared and made the plot worse So yeah, to me watching mlp was with it and being part of the fandom. I still have all episodes and the movie and will rewatch s1-8 and the specials but I don't see s9 as my canon ending. My headcanon changes the plot after season 8 xD

Not to mention that Luna herself said, that nightmares can cause problems to your psyche. So by helping to stop nightmares, she also helps you to prevent a mental breakdown or similar

How do you deal with stuff created by haters and creepers? Until season 5, I only had good moments with mlp and fan-content. Yeah, there always had been wierd, dark, bloody or otherwise bad stuff but I usually was always able to ignore it. During season 5, I saw a pic, can't remember everything but it seemed harmless, and made the mistake to google google the source of it. I'll spare you the details, but it caused two main things: 1. It made me hate Starlight (and Discord) for years and ruined the season 5 finale. Even know, I still hate/despise broken horns and Sombra's slavery plan (I celebrated his and the Storm Kings death) 2. I was very close to leave the fandom because of it Took me years to more or less recover from it, despite a remake of the same stuff, now with zebras being the bad guys (yeah, I hate most zebra ocs since that time, Sorry to all zebra owners) and luckily I never quit the fandom. However, even know that trauma sometimes returns So back to topic; how do you deal with that kind of stuff?

you forgot the time right after defeating Discord the first time and no, I don't hate them and it's not because of Joker, Pennywise or the horror clown hype a few years ago. It's more that, with time, they kind of started to look a little creepy. Not all of course, just a few of them

You should, they're good and, at least for me, they're canon. Unlike the IDW comics, they're close to the show and don't really mess anything up with the show's continuity ;-) Except maybe the "Ponyville Mysteries" books (not comics) The journal of the two sisters shows some stories from Celestia's and Luna's childhood. Shortly after Equestria was founded, the three tribe's leaders chose Starswirl to represent them. He then searched for Celestia and Luna and asked them to become the rulers/guardians of the new formed kingdom (just re-read that part). It also implies that Celestia and Luna are born alicorns (the show never said so otherwise. It just said that no alicorn was born "in Equestria") back to topic: So as long as Twilight and her successors are continue to chose new ponies to ascend to alicorns or alicorns from outside of Equestria appear, it's unlikely that there will be a split. And even if someday there won't be an alicorn, then Equestria already had unity for many thousands of years, so once more, a split is unlikely in my opinion edit: After watching the movie I'm now 100% sure, that G4 never ended up as G5. Both are two complete different worlds. Made a big post for explaining my opinion

Actually, from what I remember, they did form Equestria as a united kingdom before they met Celestia and Luna, but they chose them as the rulers shortly after founding it because alicorns are the unity of all pony tribes in one species Need to re-read the Journal of the two sisters someday for that

Yes, it kind of is a breach of privacy but I would prefer Luna's help over nightmares. The way I understand is that Luna only spies on nightmares (usually) and if Luna would enter my dream when I have a romantic dream about her, I don't think that she would be mad. You can't force your emotions^^ Not to mention that I would prefer a romantic dream with Dashie <3

I like head-canons and also use them. They can help you when the makers of a show are messing up the story by forgetting canon things (yes, it also happened a lot in G4) or just forcing plots. Here a few head-canons I use: 1. When Celestia lost control over the Elements of Harmony, she didn't banish Luna for 1000 years but forever. Feeling guilty for not being able to help Luna, she searched for a solution for many years until she was able to shorten the banishment with a powerful spell. 2. In every generation, there had been defenders of Equestria; The pillars of Equestria, after them, Celestia recruited new heroes and so on unti the mane 6 and then the young 6 appeared. So in short, next to Celestia, there always had been heroes to defend Equestria 3. Season 9 did not happen the way it did; Twilight refused to become the ruler, the Elements never got destroyed and the Legion of Doom got betrayed by a real Grogar. They then teamed up with the heroes and defeated Grogar 4. G5 is a different world and not a sequel to G4

Despite the fact that Shining caused her phobia, I like the idea that all alicorns having a silly phobia Twilight - Ladybugs Celestia - Chicken Now we just need one for Luna and Cadence (For my OC, I might chose clowns...they're creepy)

To me, it's a complete different timeline. Since I still need to watch the movie, I'll only make a short wall of text Even with a big time difference, it's not very likely that Equestria of G4 will turn into Equestria of G5. In G4 we learned that a disaster destroyed the three kingdoms (it might have actually been Windigos or something else) so that they needed to work together. They had chosen Celestia und Luna to create a united Equestria and they, especially Celestia, archived it. G4 Equestria, despite some exceptions, is a united world with almost no racism and by the end of the show, the equality was not only between ponies but also dragons, griffins, kirin, yak, hippogriffs and changelings (maybe even more species). Since Twilight is smart, I'm 100% sure that she made sure that her successor(s) also understands the importance of friendship and equality before turning them into the next alicorn(s). So without a giant disaster or big war, it's unlikely that they would spit again. It would work on a war loving species like humans and maybe griffins, but not for a peace loving species like ponies Not to mention that the genes between the races had been exchanged (two earth ponies had a pegasus und a unicorn form), so a G5 Equestria with split races is not very likely.

I kind of stopped reading the IDW comics a long time ago (the last one I read was #26 of the main series) because I didn’t really like how they treat some of the characters (especially the princesses. I mean seriously, why weren’t they able to escape not magical vines? ). Not to mention the does they have introduced which are the same species as…well, a similar race some people turned into monsters for their hate filled stories. However, when I was on derpibooru I saw a very dark comic cover (#62) and read what that comic was about. Since I don’t really want to give IDW a third chance (the prequel to the movie was the second) I wondered if there is a website or something similar, where you can read the summary of the whole comic. For example why the hay they want to give Canterlot to the griffons or why the yaks thought they might be able to attack the dragons and think they could win instead of ending as grilled food. Do you know a place with full summaries of the plot of the comics? I marked this as a spoiler because of the #61 plot I wrote.

Time to actually use my account here^^ Just read the book "The stormy road to Canterlot" and I'm not sure how I should feel about "Tempest Shadow" (I hope we will get her real name in the movie).
