      You just have to teach her to it. Like dogs, cats too need training :) But I trust you knew that :) 

      And Scratching post in Finnish is Raapimispuu, that literally translates to Scratching wood/tree

      There is many ways to train a cat. You can do it with rewards, or punishments. (not abusing the animal of course).

      How we have trained our cats to be the little angels they are, is by making it clear to them when they did something wrong.

      For example in your case, when they would scratch the carpet, We say "no!" with commanding voice, pick them up, and put their paws on the scratching thing. An since our cats are outside-cats, they get thrown out if they do bad things inside. 

      And maybe after they do the thing right, give them nice petting :) 

      And now they are most trustworthy cats in the world that know how to ask if they want outside or food, and know where they are not allowed. :3 Hay, they sometimes even ask permission to eat. :P 

       

      Cats aren't stupid, some say they are smarter than dogs, but they are stubborn, but like a child, when you make it clear what they can and what cannot do, they learn well :)
