      It was here long before I joined. But there are some people who just like to debate, and so rather than have controversial topics being created within more casual areas of the forum, I gather it was decided to keep them all in one place and away from anyone who has no interest in seeing hotly debated discussion. Also, it allows us to impose restrictions like the minimum post requirement without it affecting non-debate topics.
