      I like cryptocurrencies - they are completely useless and will crash and burn at some point of course, but the ideas behind them are fascinating ;)

      @Fennekin: @Cypherlicious definitely-not-meme summarized mine thoughts about that... ahem... stuff quite diligently. The cryptocurrencies are almost typical pyramid scheme, but the ideas are forsooth quite fancy: technical - as aplicable methods... and political/psychological - as something to know about and avoid at any cost.

      Depends muchly on the cryptocurrency in question - there is some interesting work around smart contract blockchain - such as Ethereum - but the dominant Bitcoin is very much a ponzi, in that even with the increased transaction costs ($20 now, I hear?) the current scale of BTC mining could not be sustained if BTC were worth less than $5K or so.

      The bitcoin mining system is also a horrible one, deliberately designed to limit thoughput to one block per ten minutes, and suffers from the usual tragedy of the commons; if all the major mining consortiums agreed to turn off 50% of their assets, the cost per block would also halve, but the actual distribution of coins not alter (which of course won't happen as everyone there would want everyone else to turn off 50%, so their odds improve for the same amount of mining they do now)
