    People always pick on Applejack when she 'lies' by sarcastically saying, 'The Element of Honesty, everyone'. But there's a difference between lying just to lie, and lying because you don't want to hurt anypony's feelings. Applejack does the latter because she doesn't know what else to say. She's not being an asshole. 

     

    Like in 'Boast Busters', Applejack chimes in about Rarity's green hair, she goes, 'It's  gorgeous!'. She's not lying to lie - she's saying what Rarity would want to hear.

      Personally, I've always seen Honesty not as incapable of lying, but knowing when to say what needs to be said, no matter how much someone may not want to hear it.

      And one can't really expect them to represent their elements perfectly all the time (they're just ponies, after all). Pinkie isn't happy all the time, Fluttershy wasn't that kind on a couple of occasions...

      Right! Just because they represent Elements doesn't mean they ARE that Element. It's just the element that makes them who they are, instinctively and intentionally.
