      That movie was scary, but the backstory has its sweet moments despite leading to tragedy.

      Yeah. It was interesting how the movie portrayed Nebbercracker at first.

      At first he seemed like a really freakin' grouchy old douche, but as time went on, the little vague hints given in the movie implied that there was more to the story. 

      But it turns out, he wasn't being a grouchy old douche. He warned kids to 'stay off his lawn' so that the house wouldn't eat any unsuspecting victims.

       

      And there's a little detail I'm sure many have missed. The house could move around freely toward the climax of the movie because DJ released her spirit from her cemented body, which kept it at bay.

      The cemented body reveal was the first big clue to me that the house is female. And you're right about that last part.
