I hate when straight couples are able to refer to their significant other as their boyfriend/girlfriend, but when they are gay or lesbian, they have to refer to each other as their "partner." Can't it just be the same both ways?

Why can't they? "Partner" is misleading. Could be business partner. I've heard a straight woman call her boufriend her partner.

Mostly it bothers me on TV and it keeps making me think they're trying not to hurt some homophobes' feelings.
