  1. Fall and dark skies are on my mind tonight. :ticking:

  2. I don't use any of the major social media outlets, so I'm way passed that detox stage. My main weakness is Youtube  :P

I do want to switch back to a flip phone tho.

@Tacodidra, social media is the new cigarette. Every time I visit family, they're glued to their phones, even the kids!

And they try to call me a "hermit"

@Stone Cold Steve Tuna, Spacebook: A social media platform for astronomers

      That does sound tempting :P

  3. Goldeneye Rogue Agent was definitely one of my favorite games when I was a teen. Great soundtrack and very long levels!

  4. Good night everypony!

It feels good to visit the forums. I've been so busy lately  :orly:

  5. Hello there, Jupiter and Saturn! It's been a lil while since I've seen you two.

I think this heat wave is responsible for the turbulent conditions after sunset. Everything is radiating heat into the atmosphere. Focusing in these conditions is pretty much an art  :sealed:

  6. Happy Birthday, @Arc Flash!  :balloon:

  7. I know I haven't been very social on here lately. A lot of stuff is going on, which has been stressing me out. Also had a very recent family emergency.

Just want y'all to know, I'm okay. Thank y'all for the pony hugs. You're the best  :kindness:

  9. Light pollution is a fascinating, yet very complex subject. There's way more to understanding it than simply pointing a meter toward the sky. Even under dark skies with little man-made light pollution, natural sources such as airglow, zodiacal light, gegenschein, and auroras can drastically affect sky brightness. Even the Milky Way itself brightens the night sky when overhead.  :ooh:

    1. ChB

Not to mention the Moon itself. I once went on an star-gazing tour at Mauna Kea, Hawaii. But because it was full moon that night, we couldn't see some of the constellations.

@ChB, Yep, Luna's butt is quite bright. It makes even the darkest sites have city skies.  :orly:

@Phosphor Even in bright city lights, I can't get enough of looking at Venus. ^_^

  16. I spent the last several evenings exploring a really beautiful property. It's very rural with no neighbors close by. The night sky was wonderful, the darkest I've ever seen! Only saw one small light dome low on the horizon and the few clouds I saw looked like charcoal briquettes (really dark).  The horizons away from the light dome measured 21.6 mpsas. (No zenith reading with MW overhead) :ticking:

It really is a treat to see dark lane structures in the Milky Way with the naked eye.  :fluttershy:

  21. I actually woke up early this morning and didn't need an alarm. :fluttershy:

I hope I can maintain this sleep schedule. It's probably best I take a break from late night stargazing and such for a little while.

@Twilight Luna, just a short break til I get this sleep schedule settled in. Even after a week, I feel so much better.  :fluttershy:

All those late nights and such were starting to take a toll on my health.

I bet they were. I hope you recover soon, my friend. Was Twilight sad that you’re taking a break?

      Thanks!

Not really. She still has access to my telescopes. :P

... and my thermal camera  :worry: lol

  22. Smith & Wesson is remaking the classic K-frame revolver. Looks good, but they seriously need to do away with that hideous key lock on the side. :eww: The forcing cone was also redesigned. Wonder how much stronger it is over the original?

I still prefer the original models, which have hand fitted/polished internals vs metal injection molded parts in the newer ones. I have a model 19-3 (just like the old one in the video) and it's a very smooth gun  :fluttershy:

Rugers are nice too! They tend to build their guns like tanks. I don't have a Ruger revolver but I have a P89. That thing is overbuilt for a 9mm  :sealed:

      @J.T.What's your favorite gun?

I love the M1911, it has such classic lines. :squee: the Colt single action army is great too!

I would love to have a S&W Model 3. Those old top break revolvers are sexy!  :squee:

I would have to sell my big telescope to afford one tho. lol

  23. Hmmm... Processing the raw images from Juno would be fun for nights that are cloudy. I might take a shot at some of them. I could use the practice.  :derp:

@Splashee, I use the gaming pc I built like 9 years ago.

It does have an Intel Q9650 3.0GHz quad core tho. It gets the job done.

Saving for rural land has been my priority this year, but I plan to buy a nice laptop for capturing planetary video and processing them into images.

    4. Splashee

I have a similar computer, quad core with hyperthreading on (8 threads). My main problem is 4 GB of RAM, which slows down the computer while editing huge images.
