  1. I think the crescent phase has to be my favorite. After sunset, the night time portion of the Moon is illuminated with reflected light from Earth, known as Earthshine. It's easily visible to the naked eye and can be captured with a camera and zoom lens. I used my 90mm refractor, since my dslr was already mounted to it. Last image is my 3rd attempt on the Flame and Horsehead Nebula. Enjoy!

      @Phosphor

Did you think you saw something in the Horsehead Nebula &

stare at it for three straight hours only, to realize you were wrong? :o/:P

      Phosphor

@Sparklefan1234, I may have done something like that a time or two.

It's easy to get lost in Jupiter's cloud bands at high magnification. :-P

Check Mate. Wait, that joke doesn't work...

Jokes aside, that is a marvellous image.

  4. Imaging gear is inside and I'm sleepy. I'll share the results with y'all tomorrow.

    Good night everypony!

  5. I think of my favorite planet: Saturn Ha ha I think about what other planets beyond our solar system look like and if other lifeforms exist there. I also think about what it would be like to experience space travel at the speed of light.
  6. Spherochromatism For some reason, I always forget what it means and I shouldn't since it's present in cassegrain telescopes, especially in UV wavelengths. Basically it describes how spherical aberration varies with wavelength. I will probably forget this tomorrow. lol
  7. I guess a lurker. I mostly hang around the general discussion area. Might occasionally post in Sugarcube corner. I am not good at role playing, so I don't visit there.
  8. I rarely ever write about stuff. I did write a blog on here recently about my hobby in amateur astronomy. I will probably write another one later on.
  9. All setup and ready to go. Now I just wait for the Orion Constellation to rise higher in the sky. :ticking:

There is a slight breeze. Hopefully that'll settle down in a hour or so.

@J.T., what the picture doesn't show is the mess of cables a few feet away for the computer and autoguider.

@Arc Flash, I keep a few in my stash. I like fixing those old tube radios. Most of them just need new capacitors and they'll sing again.

  11. Best time to observe a crescent Moon is after sunset. I love seeing the Earthshine  :awed:

      @Stone Cold Steve Tuna

Before I had dedicated astronomy cameras, I would take pictures of the Moon with my phone held just above the eyepiece.

Well, that certainly looks extraordinary. The moon is always fascinating to look at.

      Lucky Bells

Ooooh, that is beautiful. :o Almost kinda reminds me of an eclipse.

  12. It's been a little while since I posted anything in this thread. Pretty much the whole month of December was rainy. It feels good to be back in business again! To help obtain more exposures, I purchased an intervalometer. Basically, it's a digital timer that also operates the camera for you. It worked wonderfully last night. I set the parameters, pressed start, and went inside to watch the football game. Here's my 2nd attempt on the Orion Nebula: (details on lower left corner)
  13. The Orion Nebula:

I noticed a huge decrease in noise after combining 160 exposures vs 30 or so like I use to. With the intervalometer operating the camera, I can obtain more exposures without having to freeze my butt off. Some streaks are visible near the brightest stars. I probably should have used the autoguider. I will next time.

Can't wait to try the Horsehead Nebula again  :ticking:

Another wonderful picture! :rarity: So colorful and beautiful...

  14. I'm feeling energetic and motivated today. The weather was beautiful and sunny, which really lifted my mood. Got a lot accomplished today.
  15. Got the intervalometer set up and running. Now I can do astrophotography and watch tv at the same time... or visit the forums.  :P

Tonight's target is the Orion Nebula

@Twilight Luna, will do. Orion Nebula image should be posted sometime tomorrow. I'm curious to see how it turns out with the extra data from the intervalometer  ^_^

  17. Reborn as anything on Earth? I think I would want to be reborn as a radio wave. I would get to experience the speed of light
  18. I think my spelling is pretty decent. If I can't get it right while typing, Google is there.
  19. Finished testing the vacuum tube radio I was working on a little while ago. Had to correct some wiring mistakes from the previous "technician". Now I just need to go clean up the mess I made
  20. Correcting other people's wiring is no fun, but it's good to hear an old vacuum tube radio play again.

  21. I'll talk to electronics and mechanical equipment that I'm working on. I've done it since I was a kid, so I guess it just carried over into adulthood.
  22. How's everypony doing today?

The clouds are still around, but it's still nice to see some sunshine! :fluttershy:

@Stone Cold Steve Tuna, I have. Here's one from a month ago.

If you're interested, I have a thread in the Nonpony Art Section with all of my astronomy photos.
