I like the greek mythology reference in "The Lost Treasure of Griffonstone", with the flashback were Arimaspi stole the Idol of Boreas from the griffons. The Arimaspi were a tribe of cyclopes in northern Scythia who lived at the foot of the Riphean Mountains (the Carpathians). The cyclopes warred with the gold-guarding griffins in the Hyperborean lands near the cave of Boreas (the North Wind god) for there treasure. Its very interesting since we don't really learn much about griffins in the show.
