Let's put it like this:

Imagine you are doing a regular table, if when you are done the table can't fulfill its task of holding things because of any reason then its not a table and therefore it wasn't done at all.   

I grew up with that saying too. 

@Kyoshi While I understand what you're saying, the saying isn't about one's abilities or capabilities. It's about practical tasks and projects only. And even the people who taught me the phrase "Anything worth doing is worth doing correctly" would always acknowledged when a project was too tough to finish alone, or when sometimes just giving your best is good enough.

Depends on the definition of “correct”. Something correct in one’s eyes can be completely wrong in another’s.
